Hopefully this is in the right section....   I have one of my rims that was rubbing on the side plate of the tire rack on my trailer.  The  damage is about 1 to 1.5mm deep and about the size of a nickel.  If I buff this smooth would it be acceptable for use or is it pooched??

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,
I wouldn't be concerned about it. Since the damage occurred on the tire rack there is no risk of cracks and the small amount of material lost is insignificant. Blend it out and move on.

Thanks.  I did blend it with a Dremel and it is still only about 1.5mm deep.  I will put it in with some spare take offs and see what tech has to say when it comes out next spring.

Thanks again...  :-)

Do you realy want to gamble with your safety for the cost of one $130 rim. That has caused a stress riser in that spoke. In my shop that would go to the recycler.

I tend to agree with Ralph.  That definitely looks like you've introduced a stress point.

Maybe you could relegate that wheel for use with rain tires, where it will have less stress.

All valid comments. I guess I should know better but the cheap side of me wants to save it. I may do exactly that and put a set of rains on those rims. I can always do a dye pen check on it after each race.

There is very little stress induced at the speeds I race at, but better to be safe than sorry.

Cheers

Paul

I would run it, doesnt look too severe to me. I have rims that have more damage than that from wheel to wheel contact. But I would not run them at Sebring where you are bouncing and sliding sideways at 80mph through T17 and 90mph through Turn 1. Ask Alex what happened to one of his rims this weekend, same corner that Bling-Bling Blanchard lost all his aluminum wheel nuts!!!

The only non Momo Podium set of wheels I still owned, I've owned it since new and never hit a wall or car with it.... Scary.

Throw that wheel away.  Your safety( and your competitors safety) is not worth the $125 savings. They are prone to break anyway, that is like starting a wedge in a piece of firewood.

It would make a nice storage reel for your air hose in the garage, extension cords in the trailer or garden hose outside.  Impress your friends!  :-)

I wish I could find the video of Mr. Pink's crash at T14 at Road America a couple years ago and the result damage. Many times the cost of the wheel that broke sending the car into the concrete wall. One can see the car/steering action as the wheel broke.
