I pulled the head off my brothers and my the 1999 and it appears that I may have used the wrong timing mark putting it back together. On the front damper there are two painted marks. a gold one to the left and a white one to the right. I had assumed that the white one to the right of the gold one is the mark for TDC but it appears that I was wrong and may have it off a tooth.

Does anyone know why they paint the two marks on the damper?

On the '95, one is 10* and the other is TDC. I've found marks that were off by about 9* before when checking the marks against true TDC. Suprisingly, the car did run. Others have found about 5-6* on occasion. Not sure how that happens but it does. You may be using the right mark, but the mark may be in the wrong place.

I was told that the second painted mark on the front damper the one to the left is TDC the one to the right of it is not the TDC mark. this time we took all the covers off so we could see the bottom of the crank and aligned it up with TDC and then set the cam wheels on their marks. We got it this time.

My advice if you have to take off a timing belt that you are not replacing, i would put the timing marks on TDC, I would mark the timing belt so you can put it on the same exact spot. lastly there should be 19 groves between the top timing marks between the cam timing marks.
