What are you guys using and what will fit well in a 1990 SM. Using a sparco 2000 now but time to replace and looking for an upgrade.

I'm interested in the Sparco Ergo which has removable winglets, if anyone has tried one of those. Either way, I'm installing the tunnel-notch panels to simplify installation and improve positioning.

Pay attention to the seat dimensions - particularly height.  It's a pretty big seat.  Friend had issues with the height as the back wanted to occupy the same space as the roll bar hoop.

Thanks that is my concern as well. I like the Sparco Ergo and have been looking at that as well.

I had a Racetech in my 1991.  It was without the tunnel mod, so it was pinned against the cage on the upper left side.  I have an OMP seat for my new build.  It is noticeably narrower in the halo and I hope that this makes the install in the new car easier.

 A little more info from you would be helpfull. If we knew your location and if it's a new build maybe someone knows someone with that seat in a Spec Miata and you could sit in the car and use the same cage faber. Whatever you do, don't buy a seat untill you have set in it.

Sparco makes some good seats that are reasonably priced.  I have the ProADV and it's good but it is a big seat and just barely fit the car in size L.  The Circuits are pretty nice too.

 

While you are at it, check out the OMP which is similarly priced.  The RaceTech and Recaros are also really nice but I believe they are a bit pricier.  

 

Try and find a local retailer or find local racers with the seat you want and see if they'll let you drop by their house to see and test fit yourself to the seat.  That's what I did.  Fellow racers were very willing to help.

Seconding the OMP - we picked up the RSTP (or whatever string of letters it is) for 2014 and had a very nice bracket made by Matt Kessler so we could support a 'quick change' seat position between myself & the wife.  He didn't use the tunnel notch panel I bought as it removes the cross-brace which he feels is not the best approach and on the tunnel you're replacing a multiple layers of thicker gauge metal with that single, lower-gauge panel.  Plus cutting out metal from that area didn't give him options for his "bracket fantastic" mounting!

 

As Glen mentions, this seat is a narrower halo and Matt managed to not only get it square to the steering column (a common issue with self-installed composite seats) but within less than an 1" of its centerline as well.  My only complaint is the top-most right-rear halo portion rubs on the cross tube (triangulates the rear downtubes) and squeaks so you can hear it through your helmet and the left halo front edge is 'pushing' against the top corner of the window net; both are very minor issues in the grand scheme of safety.

 

Oh, and I'm 6'3"/235#, the wife is 5'10"/notonyourlife# (in a pre-built car too so no custom positioning of cage tubes in our case) in North Jersey, Kessler is in Berlin, CT...if you're in the area feel free to buzz me and we can get your eyes on the real thing.
