We are back from our first professional race (Playboy MX5 Cup) this past weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. On the good news side, we’re convinced we have the potential to do well in this series. This was Kevin's first pro race and first time in this car. Kevin qualified 9th, but after three laps had moved to 4th. Unfortunately, Kevin was running alone while the top three (including Dean) were drafting as a pack and there was no way he could catch them without a drafting partner. He slowed, waited for the 5th and 6th place cars to catch up and then the three of them started to draft and hunt down the leaders. On the bad news side, with five laps to go the 6th place car made a mistake in the draft and slammed Kevin on the exit of a fast turn sending him into the concrete. Kevin is fine; the car has body and some suspension damage, but hopefully nothing structural. We'll just have to reload and go after them again at Road Atlanta. Congrats to Dean Copeland who ran a superb race and put his car on the podium!

Too bad Kevin didn't get to finish, but look forward to his next time out. Now that you've had time to look it over, how does the car look?

Well, there’s good news and bad news. The good news – no structural damage. The bad news – crushed rear quarter panel (we hate replacing quarter panels and they’re worse on an MX5 than an SM) and we’ll need a new (expensive) rear shock. We will be replacing a lot of the suspension components on the right rear (focal point for the contact with the wall). They look fine, but we want to be sure. Interestingly, even though we didn’t finish the race we walked away with some prize money – thank you Mazda!
