I just started tearing down the engine in my '99 donor car. I was under the impression that it's an untouched engine with roughly 130,000 miles. It appears the webbing between the spark plug ports has been welded and ground or maybe just ground. Has anyone seen this before? Could this have come from the factory or has the head been screwed with. If it has been messed with, do I need to start looking for another head? Also, the cam wear looks somewhat odd. There seem to be low spots off to the sides of the lobes. Is this normal?

It is definitely not stock something happened head my have been dropped by someone. I am not an expert on the tech shed maybe Jim Creighton will weigh in. IMO it would pass tech unless the cam journals or cams have been messed with. To me someone broke the casting a bit and tried to fix it.

The more important thing is cams and ports, journals, relief cuts etc.

I have a head that looks EXACTLY like yours that came off a donor car.

Totally normal. It's the fill holes from the mold they get cut off and then rough cleaned

I have seen at least a dozen heads and never seen anything like that... I guess a dozen is not enough sample group

Thanks Chris. I was with Kyle originally, just because of how bad it looked. Of course I took a picture of the worst one. The other three don't look as bad. Makes sense that it's from the mold fill.

From a tech stand point, it might make me look closer at the head, but I don't see a problem.

But, that is just my opinion. Suggest you send the photos to John Bauer at SCCA and ask his opinion.
