Kemper Nabs Round One of Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup at Sebring
SEBRING, Fla. (March 19, 2015) – Drake Kemper, of Toluca Lake, California, drove his way to the front of the SCCA Pro Racing Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires field to take the Round One win at Sebring International Raceway, as part of the 63rd Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida. John Dean, of Sebring, Florida, finished second with Patrick Gallagher, of Thornville, Ohio, in third.
Kemper, at the controls of his No. 99 Mazda Motorsports Development/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5, started Thursday's race in fifth, but was not to be denied a win by the time the checkered flag fell. Kemper continued to show the same dogged determination he displayed during the offseason to improve as a racecar driver. By lap five, Kemper was in the lead and never looked back, as he pulled out a two-second gap over the rest of the field at the 17-turn, 3.74-mile circuit, before the full-course yellow was displayed. The checkered flag flew early as a result of a damaged car in Turn 17.
"The race season is seven months long, but the work I put in during the five months since last season makes it feel like the season never ended," Kemper said. "I was working the whole time. I lost 45 pounds and have been coaching and driving as much as I could. I was also communicating with Sick Sideways the entire time.
"At this racetrack, if you're in the draft, you want to be in third on the last lap. I figured if we were going to go back to green after the full-course yellow, I was going to need to complete the best laps of my life. Luckily, we checkered under yellow. It's not the way anybody wants to win, but we're thankful that is what happened."
In the No. 16 Bulb Jacket/PPG MX-5, Dean was also charging when the yellow came out. From eighth on the grid, Dean improved seven positions. That performance earned him a $500 bonus for the Battery Tender Hard Charger Award. On the opening lap Dean had already climbed to fifth, then began to claw his way through the leaders before the full course caution was displayed at the beginning of lap 15.
"That race was a best-case scenario for me," Dean said. "I was a little worried about my physical state on the grid, since I have been very ill for the past few days. I started the race and everything felt pretty good. There were a couple places on track where I was struggling, but that's the nature of racing.
"We're really happy. I didn't expect to finish second, but I'm extremely pleased. I'm a little bummed for Nathanial Sparks, who got tangled up out there. But, we're looking for a better finish tomorrow."
Gallagher started on the pole, in his No. 44 Howard Concrete Pumping MX-5, but lost a few positions during the opening laps. He was in the lead pack for the entire race but was unable to match the pace of the two Sick Sideways cars as the full-course yellow was displayed.
"We were just riding there waiting for the last couple laps," Gallagher said. "We got shuffled back when contact happened between Tim Paul and [Nathanial] Sparks. It took all three of the Sick Sideways guys to beat us today, and they did a good job. So, hats off to them.
"I would have liked to have seen what would have happened if we had gone green for the entire race. I think we had the car to beat. We'll see what we can do tomorrow, in Round Two."
Dean Copeland, of Bowie, Maryland, finished fourth in a hard-fought battle at the wheel of this No. 7 Copeland Motorsports/Sync Speed Inc. MX-5. Starting eighth, Copeland worked his way forward.
Nathanial Sparks, of Spanish Ford, Alabama, completed the top five. In the No. 8 OOTSK Performance/Sick Sideways MX-5, Sparks was part of the battle for the lead, but fell back while battling Kyle Loustaunau in the closing laps of the race.
In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge, Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Connecticut, drove his No. 61 Project Yellow Light SBMX-5 to victory. Staring fourth in class, Albano put in a masterful drive to take the season-opening win.
"That was an awesome race, I'm just super excited to take the first win of the season," Albano said. "I just ran my race, and bided my time, until the yellow flag came out. I'm just glad it all worked out.
"When the yellow flag came out, I just wanted to take things as they came. You can't control when the yellow flag will be lifted, or what will happen after going back to green. All you have to do is put yourself in the best position possible, and that's what I did."
Finishing second in class was polesitter Robby Foley, of Randolph, New Jersey, followed by Sam Adams, of Richfield, Wisconsin.

Dean puts Sick Sideways on Top Winning Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Round Two at Sebring
SEBRING, Fla. (March 20, 2015) – John Dean, of Sebring, Florida, took home the win in Round Two of the SCCA Pro Racing Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires at Sebring International Raceway, part of the 63rd Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida. Patrick Gallagher, of Thornville, Ohio, finished in second, followed by Nathanial Sparks, of Spanish Fort, Alabama.
At the controls of his No. 16 Bulb Jacket/PPG MX-5, Dean captured his ninth career win, becoming the winningest driver in series history. Starting in eighth, Dean found his way to the front in the opening laps of the race and battled with Gallagher for the lead at the 17-turn, 3.74-mile permanent road course. In the end, the race was decided on the last corner of a two-lap shootout following a full-course yellow flag. Additionally, Dean also won the Battery Tender Hard Charger Award after improving seven positions.
"On Tuesday morning of this week I could have never anticipated, or wished, for the week that we've had," Dean said. "I wasn't feeling well leading up to his event. We didn't qualify well, for whatever reason. The first race I drove well and had some luck on my side and we were able to podium.
"We had a late full-course yellow flag come out, and I was hoping we were going to finish under yellow, again, since I was in the lead. My team told me, on the radio, that we were going to have a green-white-checker finish, and I thought to myself that we were done. On the last lap, going into Turn 17, we were three wide. I was in the middle and thought the best case scenario would allow me to get one spot. The other guys got a little wobbly, and I was able to over-slow the car and get a great run off of Turn 17. Patrick [Gallagher] drove me all the way to the wall, but I was just able to sneak through for the win by a few feet."
Gallagher, in the No. 44 Howard Concrete Pumping MX-5, was the official leader for five laps of the 17-lap race. He was unable to hold off Dean on the last lap, and finished the two-race event with a pair of podium finishes.
"I don't know what to say," Gallagher said. "We had a car to win, and Copeland said that he was going to go with us. I wasn't sure that was going to happen. When it came down to it, I went to the inside and he [Copeland] went to the outside. We were able to get around Dean, but then I had to go to the left to keep Copeland behind me. That allowed Dean to sneak through.
"In the end, we lost by a couple feet. I'm just happy to be on the podium. We put on a good show today and I thing we have a really strong car for some of these other tracks where drafting is less important."
Sparks started Round Two in third, in his No. 8 OOTSK Performance/Sick Sideways MX-5, and was able to hold station to finish in the same position in a wild race.
"I knew from the beginning that I was going to have to run a clean race," Sparks said. "I was just running, trying to hold my position, since these are long races. At one point, I got a call from the crew that there were 20 minutes left. It about killed me.
"From there, I tried to fall in line and hold my position. It was a really tight battle out there with [Peter] Portante and Dean [Copeland]. I'm just glad I was able to come away with a podium finish. Honestly, I still don't know what happened out there. All I know, for sure, is that I kept it clean out there and kept my nose straight and cruised home to third."
Dean Copeland, of Bowie, Maryland, finished fourth for the second time in as many races at the wheel of this No. 7 Copeland Motorsports/Sync Speed Inc. MX-5. Staring in 11th, Copeland had gotten up to third by lap six and was in the mix of the lead pack for the remainder of the race.
Sebastian Landy, of Great Falls, Virginia, drove the wheels off of his No. 49 Mercury/Atlanta Motorsport Group MX-5 to finish fifth.
In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge, Sam Adams, of Richfield, Wisconsin, notched his first win of the young season. He relied on solid and consistent laps to put him in a position to win, at the end.
"I was hanging back in fourth and fifth for most of the race," Adams said. "I never got up into the top two until the last lap. I was just trying to keep the tires in good shape throughout the race.
"When I saw the full-course yellow, I figured that was going to be how we finished the race. Luckily, we were able to go back to green for a couple laps. I was aggressive on the restart, and got pushed wide in Turn One. I was able to get back to the front and draft Robby [Foley] down the back straight. In the last corner I got around him for the win."
Finishing second in class was polesitter Robby Foley, of Randolph, New Jersey, followed by Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Connecticut, in the No. 61 Project Yellow Light/Manfredi Jewels SBMX-5.
The next stop for the SCCA Pro Racing Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires is scheduled for April 10-12, at NOLA Motorsports Park, as part of the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana.

Kyle Loustaunau: Mid-Season Report
Club Racer Shootout winner has faced a steep learning curve in his rookie season of pro racing as he adjusts to the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires.
“It makes me question everything I know, because I had to really learn how I drive a racecar, driving these cars,†says Kyle Loustaunau, hardly sounding like a NASA Western States Spec Miata champion and winner of the Mazda Club Racer Shootout. What he's learning is that while some of his experience applies to his current ride in an Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5 in the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires, not all of it does.
TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, May 1-3, 2015:“It's not like driving a Spec Miata where I can run hot into a corner and be fast out,†he continues. “These cars do not like that whatsoever and they will throw a fit. They like a really slow, controlled entry, and it's all about exit speed with this car. It's all about getting the car slowed for a corner and how fast you get out of the corner. That's been the toughest thing to learn, because I like to overdrive the car and kind of wring its neck, and you just can't go fast in these cars doing that.â€
Loustaunau thinks he's getting the hang of it, but the results in the first six races at three different venues – Sebring International Raceway, NOLA Motorsports Park and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca – have left him wanting. After the first race, he's had a steady string of top-10 finishes and is the highest rookie in the standings at ninth in points. But that's not enough for someone who's used to winning.
“It really takes zero mistakes to win one of these races, the competition is so high and most of these guys have been in the series three or four years. They're done making their mistakes, so it's coming down to me learning as fast as I can. I think I've figured it out; it just takes complete, 100-percent mental focus. Not overdriving the car, and not getting too disappointed after having a bad run. Just putting your head down and focusing on the next session and making the car better,†he says.
Aside from some lessons in racecraft, Loustaunau is getting a crash course in the business side of racing, and how big a part of the sport it actually is.
“I need to find money for next year, and that's what Mazda wants me to do. Mazda has been helping me find money for next year, and I couldn't ask for anything better than that, because I want to have a drive next year. It's tough and it weighs on you, because it doesn't let you focus 100 percent on racing. And I know in the professional ranks, the business side is more than the actual racing portion,†he explains.
Racing this season on the Mazda scholarship, he's learned that money doesn't go as far as one might wish in motorsports. While the scholarship covered running the car, a new driver's suit, entry fees and tires, there are a lot of other things, such as travel, that he has to fund himself. Still, when questioned about advice for drivers that want to make the club-to-pro transition, he says there aren't many routes better than the one he's traversing.
“I wanted to attend the Mazda shootout for five years,†Loustaunau says. “Each year I laid out a plan within my budget that let me get there. There were certain scenarios I could take to get to that road. As I got older, the money got tighter. I bought a house and the money got even tighter, so those paths narrowed down to one. As long as you put your head down and have a plan, you'll be surprised what you can get done. In my case, Mark Drennan looked unbeatable that year. I knew I was going to have a tough road to get through him and get that win at Sonoma. But luckily that's my favorite track; it's 30 minutes from my house and I have a ton of experience there. So does he, but it just give me a little extra fire. Having a plan, having that plan be reasonable and sticking to it can get you there.â€
Look for Loustaunau and the rest of the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires competitors at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on July 10-12.
