 Hey all,

I am trying to figure out the rear drive train on my NA.  I plan on racing SM next year.

The car is a 1990 Model Year with original rear uprights.

I sourced a Torsen II differential from a 2000 model year. I bought the drive shaft, rear diff with casing, and the one piece style half shaft axles.

I am aware that the NC has 5 mm extra of track width per side, are the axles also 5 mm wider to account for this? Or is this extra 5mm added between the kingpin axis and wheel mounting surface? I have read that the spline diameter and length are the same NA-NC, this is why I am confused. Where was this extra 5 mm put in? I will also need the larger wheel bearing nut correct?

Will these parts I just bought swap directly into my original NA rear uprights and Hubs?

Thanks in advance for the help,

-Z

To do the Torsen swap to the NA you need a torsen, a carrier for the torsen, the NB Half shafts and the NB drive shaft. they bolt up and your good to go.

Mr. Lovin'-

For clarification, you refer to an NC repeatedly throughout your post.  However, you own an NA, and you bought parts from an NB.  The NC models started in 2005.  1999-2004 are NB models.

I suppose that was a bit presumptuous.  How do I know your gender.  Mr, Miss, Mrs., Ms. or Mr-Mrs, or Mrs-Mr...how many gender's are there now?

The rear knuckles for the NB actually have NC stamped on them (those are the ones with the 5mm wider track).

So many errors.

Tom, NC cars started in 2006 not 2005. 90-97 are NA, 99-05 are NB, 06-15 are NC and 16+ are ND

You will also need the 1.8 driveshaft bolts/nuts/washers as they are a larger diameter than the 1.6 pieces

Depending upon the year of manufacturer of the half shafts, you may need new nuts. The very early one piece axles still used the small nuts. The 2 piece 1.8 axles also use the small nuts.

The axles are the same overall length. The additional 5mm is in the upright, and pushes the wheel outward. The axle simply expands at the inner tulip (the plunge joint) to accomidate the extra length. The letters NC are cast into the back side of the upright. All NA and NB splines are the same.

Don't let that Mclovin guy on track. His license expired 7 years ago

Sorry.  Of course, you are correct Dave.  In my defense I confused calendar year with model year.

Thx for the info guys.

My team and I are recovering from a differential scam off craigslist a few months ago.  We are paranoid about fitment of the rear drive train as we are using parts from three different cars.

And thats Mr. Luvin to all you lovely Midwest folk.   :toast:
