Installed a new steering rack in the car and after alignment determined I installed it's off a spline or two. So when you turn the wheel fully in both directions it goes an "hour" further one direction. Should I correct this at the next alignment or would correcting this small offset be anal?

Falls into the anal category. 1 spline at opposite lock won't make  an appreciable difference.

Having said that, I moved mine until it was equal...

On occasion...not as a lifestyle .LOL

Mostly just so it's easier to center the rack when setting toe.

Personally, I would get it centered.

Turn all the way right, count turns to all the way left. Go back 1/2 the number of turns. Now rack is centered.

If your steering wheel quick release hub is a bolt on, simply remove the hub. Put back on straight.

Then reset toe.

easier than pulling the rack out.

If your quick release hub is welded, then you have to take the rack back out. In which case I may leave it for next allignment.

It's easy enough to move the shaft where it connects to the rack without removing the rack. Collapsible steering shaft.

How is this accomplished? I got know sense the shaft from firewall to universal joint at rack would retract at all.

There is an inner and outer shaft between the rack and firewall, like a telescoping leg on a tripod or easy up canopy with an o-ring between to keep it from falling out. Mandated by the NHTSA when we were kids to keep people from being impaled on steering wheels in accidents.

Spray some lube up into the over lap, remove the pinch bolt from the rack side of the coupler, then wiggle, push, curse, curse, curse until it moves the 1 inch you need to do it.

Lather, Rinse,  Repeat until you're satisfied.

You can do it.

Hum, don't know if that sounds any easier than just pulling the rack. I'll have to take a look at it when time to align it again.
