I've been lurking for a bit here trying to decide on what direction to go in. I'm finally in a position to make a decision so I thought I'd get some advice. I'm looking to build a spec car. Im on the fence for 1.6 or 1.8. The car will be a full racecar. It will be used for track days at MSRH. I will be driving it some myself, renting to my customers for track time, and trying to rent to others for schools or events. For a little background, I've been in the pro race industry for the past 10 years or so mainly in ALMS, Grand-am, Tudor, World challenge, and some other non pro series. I have built cars from base Porsche cup cars to full LMP1's. That being said I'm kinda picky on buying used race cars. I'm debating on doing a 90-93 as just a straight rental ride build or doing a 99 that could be competitive if needed. I can always start with the rental ride and build another if it goes well. I have a full shop and the only thing on the build I would not be doing is fully welding the cage and the paint/bodywork. I'm looking for some recommendations on which way to go with it and up for ideas on getting a built car or building my own. Thank you for all the help guys!

My guess is you have the means...pointless to build IMO. Buy a good 1.6 and see how it goes...if you have fun driving the car and if In fact you can generate a little income and exposure to your business. then move to the next step. Then again, if you have the means and want to spend $15k and have the time...usually a fun experience! You will be buying a used car for less than the sum of its parts...really a no brainier if you want to try something. If it doesnt work out likely you'll get most of your investment back less consumables.

Welcome and have fun!

That's kind of where I'm headed. I'm just having trouble finding something that is not a complete hack job. Thanks.

Same answer I give everyone;

READ READ AND READ some more

read this website, ignore the crap, but lots of good info

read the GCR, so you know what you buying/building is legal (which equals resale value)

read my book, available below

Then read them all over again.
