I haven't experienced this issue before. Couldn't find anything online or in the manual as to the cause.

Upon removing the air intake on our '91' to work on the alternator belt, I discovered motor oil throughout the pipe from the Throttle Body to just short of the half way mark towards the air filter. Additionally there was oil on the inner surface of the Throttle Body and about 4 ounces in the Resonance Chamber which is the box that is attached to the inlet system that hangs down just above and in front of the alternator. Perhaps this is the purpose of the box and it was too full because it requires draining. If so I'll be sure to drain it regularly in the future. If not, what should I be looking for to remedy this situation?

I tried duplicating the oil leak flow without success with the inlet system off while running the car at idle as well as revving the motor significantly. No leakage.

As for performance, the car ran it's best at the last race two weeks ago.

Your assistance to solve this mystery is deeply appreciated. I thank you in advance.

Sounds like maybe you are getting a lot of blow by past the rings which in turn pressurizes the crankcase more than normal and forces oil though the PCV valve to the intake. From there reversion makes it appear to swim up stream.

And no, you shouldn't need to drain the resonance chamber, it is strictly that, an intake tuning device.

Don't drain 4 ounces of oil?

Crankcase pressure pushes oil all over it seems!

:) what I meant was, you shouldn't need to check and drain it regularly because it shouldn't be getting in there.

This is your answer.  I assume your car smokes a large amount?

My old 1.6 used to get oil in there as well but it usually wasn't much and it took several races for it to make it noticeable.

Thanks everyone for the answers.

Surprisingly the car wasn't smoking at all. The plugs don't show any oil burning as well. I imagine the buildup has been over the course of this and last season as I haven't had it apart since then. Well, hopefully that's the case. We'll know after this weekend. As a test I've changed the oil to a 10x40 from a 10x30 in the event the ring end clearances have grown too much. Works on a street car so I figured I'd give it a try. Time is tight this week but if some time opens up when the neighbors aren't asleep I hope to run a leak down. If not, next week for sure. I'll post what I find.

Chris,

I can't tell. Is that a thumbs up or a time bomb symbol? Seriously.

It is a thumbs up lol. I've seen excess wind age caused by over filling also put oil in the tube. Make sure you are not over full
