I think because everything relating to the brackets and fasteners is within parenthesis, apart from the hardtop, that it is pretty clear that "it" refers to the hardtop.

Not to mention it'd be grammatically incorrect to refer to latches, fasteners, and mechanisms as "it" since they are plural.  If you are going to bother to rewrite it, you could just have:

Cars may compete with the Mazda factory detachable hard top in place, but it is not mandatory. If equipped, latches shall be replaced with positive fasteners and rear pin attachment mechanisms must be used or
replaced with positive fasteners.

thank you to the SMAC for getting this through!  time and time again, shops have dealt with trying to get taller drivers to fit just right in a Miata.  those days are gone.

we can now comfortably fit a 6ft 7 in driver using a FIA containment seat with a huge amount of headroom because of this rule change.

the naysayers can think it lowers the CG BUT it adds weight to the wrong side of the car the way we do it.  1/8 in. plate steel completely welded and angled at the front for curb jumping.  extremely solid and a much safer platform to mount the seat than thin sheetmetal.

The word 'may' renders the conjunction 'but it is not mandatory' redundant. :tipsy:

Marc,   VERY NICE. Safety should always be at the fore front of builds.

And to anyone claiming there's a gray area to exploit - the minimum thickness allowed is thicker than what you're replacing so you may be lowering the CG but you're adding a reasonable chunk of overall weight to the car.  Outside of some creative "aero goodness" that might come of this (but even that's debatable/limited with the total area delineated) I don't believe you will find this to be a 'must do' modification unless.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say you may have more cars usable/salable with this allowance as now you can lower the pan when an otherwise good car/cage would prevent you from buying it.

You can interpret this anyway you like.. THE ONLY possible gain is lower CG, which will amount to all but nothing. I have won two national championships with my floor unmodified and WAY TOO MUCH CG raised on WRONG side of the car and it I seemed to do ok. Anyone doing this mod which will easily be $500 for any reason other than they want/ need to be lower in the car is a fool. We will be making a a kit that incorporates our Notch out panel. But again, unless your head is over the roll bar, it is a waste of time and money.

The floor modification recommendation will be voted on by the BoD at their Oct meeting.  Please drop a letter into the system with your comments for or against.  Don't modify until they approve it.

I would recommend any driver whose head is at the top or above the roll bar have this modification done. The damage done to your neck and head from an impact to the top in a roll over could be fatal. That plastic top would not help. And I'm sure you would not want everyone writing how great you were and how much they miss you here.

This has been brought up several times in years past and got shot down. So if you support lower seating capability please write a letter.

Could someone please share pictures on how best to modify the Cam sensor and harness? My car has historically had the same problems as Dave saw on Tom's car.

Johnny... like Dave said, the Deutsch connectors have "A", "B" and "C" molded into the housing.  I personally used grey silicone, but epoxy would work well too.  Just trying to keep water out of the sensor, and also keep the wires from shorting out on each other.  The electrical guru's of the world may have a better suggestion, but it's been working fine thus far.

This pic should help (protective sheathing removed)
