Ok, so all you have to do is take a Toyo RR tire and the contingency over to Hoosier and tell them to make it this, but ask for no advantage if it shaved, right ?

To take this one step further, I'd like to see Hoosier go to a Toyo-esque payout scale. Even though it'd hurt me, I don't think it is healthy for regional racing to give the top one or two people, who are already dominating, free tires for the season. (Speaking for contingency across all classes, not just SM.)

What we have is not perfect but it's a good start. I would have no problems with the contingency trickling down not just for the top 2.

I have to assume some people don't realize that there is a regional contingency, as I believe the give away tires at runnoffs are from tires not claimed out of their expectations at the beginning of the year. But I could be wrong on this.

Hoosier has by far given us much more customer service then Toyo did but that is a discussion for another thread.

You saw that Toyo goes all the way back to 14th, It's not a whole tire but better than nothing.

And If I had a tire that gives up after a hand full of HC's I'd give good service too. Show me the money.

 

I don't need track service every weekend and I can get them at the local tire shop too.

The Hoosier guys I am sure rolling their eyes at "Just as simple as a harder compound" 

 

Frank I don't think tire compounds are just as simple as. I am sure they are capable of formulating a new compound and coming up with a test to validate it.

 

But I am sure you would also like a tire that does not need to be shaved to make it fast.

I am not a tire expert BUT i have an opinion anyway. Generically a harder compound is the answer to more HC, I think the reason that shaving works on the RR is the amount of rubber that they start out with and the weight reduction taken off is a factor, but beyond that i will leave it to the experts.

I've never tried them, but all of my buddies in the GT classes up here swear by the Nitto Nt-01 (supposedly a pretty similar tire to the old Toyo RA-1). I can personally vouch for the fact that my competitors on those things do seem to get quicker all the way down to the cords. Not anywhere near as fast out of the box as a Hoosier SM/R7 or the Toyo RR - but a pretty good tire, nonetheless. Anyone got any thoughts on maybe picking a tire like that as the next SM choice?

NT-01 is the same as the RA-1. We will be back to shaving tires. And not sure the average racer (and before someone starts saying they get 30 HC out of the RA-1 that's not the average racer) gets any more heat cycles then they would get with the Hoosier.

How about spec out a min tire dia. and then it's techs problem.

The Hoosier guys are savvy.  They've likely got a compound already that would work for a bowling ball SM tire.  You should be able to fit a 970 or 980 on an SM to give it a try.  That's a harder compound that lasts a while.  For Hoosier it's not going to be difficult to get a harder tire if that's what you want.
