Pop quiz #2: What did section j say?
All, please accept my humble apology.
All - section J was a redundant compression table that was overridden by the spec lines, so it was deleted. It already had the wording "without carbon" so it was simply transferred to the spec lines section.
Yes, it really was that simple, but I love the conspiracy theory.
Full disclosure: SMAC chairman, my opinions do not reflect anything to do with the SMAC unless specifically stated.

Todd, makes an interesting point of how the Spec Line Rules override the Category Rules and Category Rules override General Technical Specifications.
BUT, under the Improved Touring rules it was brought up by a letter to the CRB that within the IT Category Rules the allowed compression ratio bump is one half point (.5) with the Spec Line compression ratio rule being 9.4. After the letter nothing changed within the written IT rules. If someone protested an IT car that had a compression ratio of 9.9:1 there could be a real issue during the protest process. No conspiracy theory with this ^.
i guess the SMAC did too good of a job for the 1.6. Loose the turn signal and wrap the intake tube and gain 3 HP for a cost of maybe $20. Port the header for another 2-3 HP for a cost of maybe $200 or less if you can do it yourself. So net gain of 5-6 HP for a total cost of $220. We also got rid of the need to parts match the headers so even bigger gain.
Now we have complaints that it is not enough. If we were add 5-6 hP to a 99 or VVT car it would completely dominate the field, there would be no contest. So IMHO we went too far with the 1.6 as it only needed a bit of help.
Maybe those not in agreement don't feel that the cost for the gain is not high enough so it can't be any good or they did not get to bolt a shiny new part on so feel underwhelmed. "I did not have to spend enough money so this change must be shit"
I was one of the biggest advocates for helping the 1.6 but after all this I believe that the perception does not even come close to reality. So since perception has overruled reality noting has or ever will change.

It would be great if we could those changes a try first, but what fun would that be? We have about 4-5 months to fill up here

I can't wait til the changes are "Official" with NASA. Got my grinder and welder ready! With a couple other upgrades, I should be see a very noticeable difference.

If those number are accurate, (I don't have any reason not to believe you) then great! Thank you!
But how were any of the 1.6 drivers suppose to know this? Until now we've been kept completely in the dark. This and Sean's post are the first time I've seen the SMAC post any numbers here.
Please correct me if I'm wrong - these are currently recommendations - they are not yet approved/compliant - is that right?
PS: We both know it is the rare 1.6 that has not already optimized the header, so maybe a net 3 HP gain for $20. That's cool.

I happy with real changes as compared to flopping around 25 pounds for years previous to these proposed to the CRB changes. 1.6er's write your CRB letters confirming you approve and want these changes.
Not to argue with Ralph, wrapping my intake snorkel tube cost approx $100.00, Pegasus heat barrier cloth # 1832 and high temp adhesive spray. Power doesn't get any cheaper. From day one, my car had cool air intake.
After winter Dyno test/tune come spring I might need to put a capable spacer between the steering wheel and the seat. The only proof we'll have that these changes are successful on track is when the complaining starts.
Nasa or Xav (new SM Dir)(He's been lurking around here) hasn't even participated in the conversation so no clue if this will happen.
They may do a wait a see approach but like I said, I have no idea.
J~
Why would he participate here? This is an unofficial forum. If I was an official the last thing I would do is discuss on a forum.
Do you think they are taking a wait and see approach on the plate for the NA 1.8 too?

While I may not post often, I do monitor this forum and all these threads. I have every intention of keeping the two organizations in-line for competitors who wish to compete in both organizations.

Why did John? if were asking questions ?
What does official have to do with anything?
Sm driver frequent here, what better way to get the word out of a change. (beside email)
J~
1. Because John is crazy.
2. Because as an official the last thing you want is a bunch of chattering monkeys (or raven lunatics) confusing the decisions you have to make. Plus only SOME SM drivers frequent here so you only get that perspective. As a participant only a fraction here is relevant unless you drive a 1.6 , and smack talk threads don't have anything to do with officiating. Better to go to the events and actually see and participate to form your opinions. Talk to your customers.
3. Making announcements here is much different than listening to the commentary here.

Would this mean that a new plate is coming for the NA 1.8?
Off topic but do you think the Pope is crazy?
J~
From what perspective? Believing in fairy tales?........Yes. Being a humble and sincere person that I admire?....... no.
The point?
Mixing in and meeting to people.
I guess all the SCCA officials here, are all crazy to huh ?
J~
Yes, yes they are. Anyone listening to all this parity talk is crazy.
Lighten up Johnny. The crazy comment was done in jest. Hence the cute little smiley face at the end of the, john is crazy comment. John is my friend. Him and I are both crazy. My avatar says straight on it that I am a lunatic. Maybe the reason John is passing off the torch is because of all the factions fighting over minutia. That said, I wish I had the energy to fight for changes for the NA 1.8 like the 1.6 crowd seems to have. Maybe I should hire some of them to champion for me.
Yes please do allow the slightly larger plate for the na 1.8 and please set the weights the same too. Currently there is a 10 pound difference in the nb carsWould this mean that a new plate is coming for the NA 1.8?
