So i am about to start a new SM build with a 2000 model donor car we just picked up at auction.  Im coming from GT-Lite racing (currently) and also am building and FP miata for next year.  Anyway, the donor car we have has foglights in the bumper.  it needs a new bumper so can we use the foglight bumper or do we need the regular no-fog one?  also can the foglight be removed and used for brake ducts?  Ive read the rules but just a little unclear as to what is really allowed and not. Thanks to all.

Fog light bumper may be used. Fog lights may be removed. If removed holes must be covered

The foglights on NB1 (1999-2000) were dealer or port installed. The replacement bumper will not come with the holes. NB2 (2001-2005) all came with the foglight holes, either with lights or with a factory block off plate.

If the foglights are removed, the holes must be covered. How they are covered is not defined.

You can not legally install the NB2 bumper (and headlights) on an NB1 car, or vice versa. They fit fine, but updating and back dating are not allowed.

Brake cooling ducts are not allowed.

Always remember what we refer to as rule #1. Everybody say it together !!!!!!

If it doesn't say you can, you can not.

Welcome to the insanity

i see this build is going to be a wild ride.  i think i like the more open rules of gt-lite and fp.  hehehe.  btw,  how much power, really, would a na1 car be down with an out of the box 100k motor as opposed to a built one by say nelson, drago, etc?  its it all in the head (whats allowed to be worked)?

I will venture a guess...maybe 7 to 12 hp. I installed a fresh head on a oem bottom end and with tuning(FP)bumped power 8hp and 4lbs torque. In the SM world that is 20+ spots in a big field! YMMV

that seems accurate.

I dynoed a 70k stock engine in an SM last week ( first one ever) :). It was 12HP off a really good car and 10HP off competitive car.

Remember it is not just the motor, but all the little things that add up.

There you go! We found almost the same! I'm sure there is a huge range but my guess is these were relatively healthy stock motors for the street. I think 10hp less is a good number in general...

With regard to your last question...stock tolerances with a few allowed machining differences. It is all in the GCR under SM. David can site you the number :)

The head of a street motor will more than likely be the greater source of power loss...but certainly not the only thing. But bang for your buck it will be the best thing to spend money on first if your budget is tight. My guess is this is not your case but more a comment for the young guys(and old) who are given it a go slowly.

unfortunately that is not the case.  I grabbed a 2000 model at auction the other day for $1000.  small core support damage and bumper was missing. had 3 choices - repair and retitle with a rebuilt title to sell, part it out, or build a sm for myself and one of my guys to play on the test day for a session or 2.  Dont think i intend to jump into the majors stuff with it but seems to be my nature - build as best as can be then run with the top guys.  Just trying to keep a cap on this in case we decide to sell that i dont get completely upside down. I have a fully loaded shop with everything including cnc machines so making anything is pretty easy.  Ill be at nola next week and guess ill have to poke around at the sm cars to see and ask some basic questions to those who will release some of the tricks and shortcuts.
