I've put together a program with KartSmarter aimed at club racers. Over the past year i developed and expanded it and we're in the final steps of rolling it out (literature, publishing etc.) That being said, all of the parts are for sale and I can also sell you an assembled kit.
It starts with the AIM MyChron 5 for $499 (same price as Solo)
-This gives a decent hud that shows: gear and rpm as well as 4 other categories (+/-, rolling time, sensors, etc.) it does everything a solo does and more. It has a GPS integrated into it, so no need to run an antenna, and i never have problems with it falling out of touch. this is a good starting point. with the integrated gyroscopes, gps and rpm you can get some decent data.
-It has a color screen and programmable shift lights and 2 warning lights.
-Also comes with a water temp gauge.
-Wifi connectivity eliminates pesky wires.
You can also expand it like any other AIM interface. I now run a Lambda for air/fuel, brake pressure, steering input, throttle position, oil temp, water temp, fuel pressure. all for the fraction of the cost of a car based system (MXG, MXL2).
Lastly, Jeff at Kart Smarter sends out all the units pre programmed to what you want. And for all the noobs like myself, he holds classes regularly that range from beginner to expert on how to use the data you've just pulled.
Anyone know if you can run channel expansion on a SoloDL? Technically it should be possible given it is all CAN, and there appears to already be an option to connect an LCU-ONE. In my experience though if it isn't already one of their pre-packaged configurations AIM has been less than helpful.
I was just looking into last night exactly what CCiufo is doing above. The CAN connection is great for modern cars with a supported ECU, but I need some standalone sensors on this vintage Mazda. I have a Mychron 3 Gold on my rotting kart, but that was pre-GPS.
Contact Dave Redzus Jr. at Precision Auto Research, 630-766-4402. They are the oldest AIM dealer in the country. If anyone knows how to make the older system work, it is Dave. tell him I sent you. You won't get a discount, but he will call back sooner.
