Newbie to Miatas with a 1990 1.6, which has been a spec Miata for years. Going over the car and found that the upper and lower radiator hoses have a 3-5 inch area where the hoses are flattened, like there was negative pressure or a vacuum in the hoses.  Anyone run into this?  Also, the car has an ESS fire system and Sam, from ESS, says that the SCCA allows some classes to self fill.  The big advantage is not having to mail ESS the tank for servicing, he'll just send you the refill kit.  Can we self fill?  Thanks,  Rich Barger,  Bolton Ct

I haven't seen flattened hoses, but I'd replace them out of general principals if I were you.  The rounder the hose, the more coolant flow you'll have.

Radiator cap not venting, creates a vacuum when the system cools down.

If the hoses collapse with the car running it is most likely a failed thermostat that will not open.

If the hoses are flattening, it's likely the radiator cap not holding pressure on the seat. I've seen a car that would suck its upper hose flat when you revved it. Granted, it was not a Miata, but the principles are the same.
