First time installing a 1.6 head. Of the two engines I disassembled, one had a gasket sealer and the other didn't. Mixed answers online and manuals so figured it best to ask those who race these.

Is a gasket sealer required or recommended for the head gasket?

Is head bolt re-torquing required after a period of time?

Much appreciated and thank you,

I did neither on my 1.6 after complete engine rebuild. I have the factory manual and followed it and don't recall either being mentioned.

There are alignment pegs between the head and block. Usually 2 I think and sometimes they stay with the block or head. It's important to make sure that you don't have one in the same home in the block and head when you put back together. The head won't sit flush and it would be pretty obvious that something is not right. They are removable but it makes life easier during assembly if you know where they are, especially if you are putting a different head with a block.

Btw, I used the head gasket from Mazda. In working with these cars I've come to realise that Mazda parts have always worked better for me with no problems.
