A race shop doing my annual strongly suggested a center net, pointing out that my head restraint (remarkably similar to this fellows - video below) will not adequately support the head on side impact.

Archives have some discussion including fact that it should warp around the seat. Any good suggestions on a model/part number and photos?

I've always believed that a RSN is one of the best 100 bucks spent on safety, even if you have a head restraint seat. Seen lots of videos of those thing failing.

I've used the Safety Solutions nets on both of my racecars and have been very happy with it.

Here's a video from last year in my old car. Even in a very slow speed impact with a H&N restraint being worn, you can see how much the head moves:

I use the same Safety Solutions net wrapped around the back of the seat. Having an aluminum seat that's bottom mounted, you'd be suprised how much additional support it provides. I'd spend the extra $40 and get the kevlar version instead of the poly one though.

I'm using the Schroth center net from HMS motorsports. Top strap attaches to diagonal at top of cage. Middle strap crosses back of the seat above the harness holes and attaches to the main hoop. Lower strap goes across back of the seat below harness holes and attaches to main hoop.

It is important to get the Kevlar version of the net as it does not stretch as much as the poly. Only nominal $40 additional. Safety Solutions C5R is a good fit in the Miata. Make sure to use "shaft collars" to locate the net on the roll bar.

Hello,
First time poster here but experienced in SCCA rally and NASA road racing but never SCCA road racing.
I am helping a buddy finish a Spec Miata last logbooked in 06. Please correct me if I am wrong:

This car currently has a Kirkey aluminum seat. According to the GCR, a RSN is suggested, not required. I found this surprising. Is the RSN not required with the appropriate side bolstered seat? Or just not required at all?

Thanks in advance,

-Dave

I can't tell what the seat brand is due the video quality but it apprears to be a cheap aluminum head restraint that bent rather easily with the side impact. I do agree the additional center net is money well spent, but don't think a quality head restrait seat would fail so easily!

Dave, right side net is not required at all in SCCA but would recommend. In NASA either a right side net OR a Head restraint seat must be installed. I chose to go save as possible and do both. If you really want to go all out you can follow Grand Am rules and do a center net on the left side as well. They require window net and then a left side net and a right side net.

Mcmaster shaft collar is what I used. It was the 2 piece clamp on. My roll cage tubing is 1.5" OD This is the link for them.

Much cheaper than what some other vendors charge for the same piece. I have seen places charging $20 each for them. I used one for my center net and 2 more to keep my belts in place as well.

Can anyone point me to a source for the net quick release with the big red button that all the Grand-Am cars are using? I'm considering adding a left side net in addition to the window net.

I'm also in the process of adding a right-side net to my SM. Hate to ask a stupid question, but do you order the 1 7/16" collars or the 1 1/2" collars if your bars are 1.5". (I.e., are the 1.5" collars slightly smaller so that they'll fully clamp on a 1.5" bar?)

TIA!

Todd, I used the 1.5" collars and they fit perfect and tightened down as they were supposed to. I have 3 of then in my car currently. One for center net and 2 for the harnesses.

Old thread but would you order the two-piece in aluminum?

Yes.  Looks like the PN is 6436K75 (for 1.5" tubing).
