Hi all, sorry if this has been discussed, I searched quickly and couldn't find anything.

I understand that the 2016 MX-5 road car and Cup car have ongoing transmission failures. Lot of discussion about the road car over at forum.miata.net. I have heard on the Cup car side that Mazda is working on a fix and may already be shipping new cars with this update.

Can any of you in the Cup community share any news about this? I am part of a group of racers looking to get into new Cup cars, but now thinking we should wait until this is fully resolved.

Many thanks in advance.

I am pretty sure all they did was beef up 3rd and 4th gear.

And they were delivered to the racers that owned the mx5 cup cars.

That is a race trans for Prod and GT racing. Not what he is talking about.

Yes, there have been 3-4 gear failures and Mazda has a fix. Don't know about cost or availability. Call Mazda direct.

The issued has been fixed in the cup cars. Mazda made it right very quickly. No worries.

Can you provide any detail, Mike? i.e. Did they fix all Cup transmissions, or only failed units. Complete transmission replacement, or parts? Does a new Cup car ordered today have a revised transmission?

I personally know two drivers who have not broken a transmission yet and they received two full units sitting there at their door.

New transmissions. everyone in the series got them. It was required to be installed. You'd have to ask Long Road Racing about how the update is handled in the new cars. I'm certain they've taken that into consideration as new cars join the series at every event.

If you've been around long enough you can recall that something very similar happened in the NC car and through trickle down technology the update eventually made it into street car production.

It would be nice if Mazda/SCCA would allow us some transmission modifications, for durability only, in the NA,B and C boxes. I understand that the splined spacer on the counter shaft is in play but there are other things that we can do to make the boxes last longer. Many are doing it anyway, but we will run out of donor boxes at some point.
