Figured I would share a video of a new toy :) This thing is awesome.

We upgraded the quality and performance of our Cylinder heads by moving to a new Newen CNC machine to do our Spec Miata heads moving forward. This machine insures the highest quality machine work possible held to the tightest tolerances. It is also completely automated so every head with be EXACTLY the same! After a few tweaks to the cad program the results on the dyno with the heads coming off the new machine are even better than what we had before! Things are looking even faster for 2017

This machine holds such tolerances and seals tighter than we have ever been able to achieve in the past, It cuts at 1200 rpm versus about 50-60 RPM of old stylee valve cutting machines.. A tedious processs for sure. This new machine uses a single point cutter and amazing precise and incredibly fast and accurate. We are able to cut all the cuts now in one pass. This used to require three different passes with three different tool. We could do each hole in almost half the existing speed but we take material off in small amounts as the core shift varies so much in the miata heads we have to make small passes.  We can load unlimitted profiles, angles and contours into the machine with CAD and then cut it. The rules are specific now, but this machine still produces a much better finished product and most importantly, each is identical. Pretty excited to try this out. The first completed head will be in a contender car headed to the NASA champs.. we shall see.

That's cool.

Does the indicator have to be/stay there for your setup?

Makes me nervous because I'd know what would happen if it hit.

It can be moved around, but not close. It sets the zero for the machine. It does a brush of seat first to determine height differential between indicator and seat

I see. Do you have a multiple tool changer ?

I've seen an indicator in one of the tools holders, it's programmed to come down to your position, same spot every time, you indicate and then it goes back, doesn't get wet from the coolant.

But that's nice.

The CNC machining was brought up in the Southwest Division as a solution to head variances during the meeting we had prior to SCCA ruling after the Laguna fiasco.

Jim,

Does this machine also automate the 1mm "break" allowance on the short turn radius or does this require a separate operation? (It would have to allow controlled tool travel motion (sweep) in the specific area of the port floor to "break" the radius)

It can do that Rich, but probably not the best option for us. SCCA techs this by measuring the width of the tool marks, in this case there would be no tool marks and a smooth(er) transition. I fear it could end up being a unwanted/needed issue with tech. We will continue to break edge with a file.

I appreciate the fact your up-grading you engine manufacturing/building capabilities, BUT. As you enjoy not understanding some of my posts there seems to be something in this thread of yours I don't understand. The thread title is "Newen C&C process on East Street Racing cylinder heads" and within your first post you reference your new Newen CNC machine. I totally understand CNC is an acronym referencing Computer Numerically Controlled. BUT, C&C in the thread title is an acronym for what, Cash & Carry?

I wouldn't have picked at you, BUT, you picked on me and then Denny went along for the ride. As is said many times, no harm, no foul.

Tangent:

Viewed a Hexapod milling machine by Giddings & Lewis at the Chicago Machine Tool show in the late 90's. There was a Hexipod design war at the time. Many versions of 6 axis mills and platforms today.
