Maxxis Cup Supermiata S3 - 2017

http://supermiata.co...cup-supermiata/

New for 2017 is the S3 "feeder" class for unmodified 90-93 1.6 Spec Miatas. Rules are simple, the car must be legal to compete in Spec Miata class with other organizations. If it is not specifically allowed below, it is not legal or allowed. The intent is to only allow existing cars with no additional modifications. The allows new drivers to get started with Maxxis Cup Supermiata to gain driving experience with minimal expenditure. There will be no awards, Superbucks or rebates on tires as there are for S2.

Visit the website to learn about the primary S2 class and new S1 class for turbocharged Miatas

Mandatory modifications

Peak power
-Engine must be tuned to make no more than 110whp on the spec 205/50/15 Maxxis RC-1 inflated to 30psi on 15x7 wheels, Dynojet 224 or 248, SAE corrected, smoothing set to "5". Three consecutive pulls within 2 minutes.
This adjustment is performed by advancing or retarding the ignition timing via the CAS (Cam Angle Sensor) or aftermarket AFPR (Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator) on cars so equipped. Driver must submit and retain of copy of dyno sheet in their possession.

Power area
-Power measurements from 4200,5200,6200,7200 will be each rounded up then combined. Total must not be greater than 396.
-Cars must run on Maxxis RC-1 in 205/50/15 size only. Rain tire will be the 205/50/15 size Maxxis VR-1.
-Car must be ballasted to minimum weight no less than 2250 lbs with driver
- OEM 15" cast 99-05 wheel may not be used

Allowable modifications
-Cars may run any single adjustable coilover. Separate/multiple rebound and compression damping not allowed. Remote reservoirs not allowed. Any spring rate allowed.
-Sway bars may be changed or modified. Must be one piece and mount in OEM locations.
-Hardtop must be 100% OEM shape but can be made of any material. Non OEM tops ok provided they meet this requirement. OEM glass rear window may be replaced with polycarbonate (Lexan, Makrolon, etc) . Acrylic or other clear or translucent polymers not allowed.
-Coolant Reroute may be added to improve engine cooling
-Oil cooler may be added to improve engine service life
-Any OEM brake assembly or component from 89-05 MX5 Miata may be used in any combination
-OEM proportioning valve may be replaced with adjustable screw type Wilwood unit.
- Any one piece aluminum 15x7 or narrower wheel may be used.

Race Format

S3 will be gridded with the S2 field. Default for most tracks is standing start. Two races back to back. Field stops and inverts on track during formation lap for second race. S3 will be fully integrated into the S2 field according to qualifying and finishing position.

S1 will have its own grid and inversion group. S2 and S3 will not be mixed with S1

From a 1.6 Spec Miata owner, WOW, another bastardized Miata class. This is the same $hit that happened to the Spec7 class across the country. Is this what's called Soccer Miata?

Not sure where that comes from or why you seem so angry.

S3 is a feeder class for S2, our main class. Show up with your legal 1.6, slap a set of Maxxis RC-1's and you are ready to race. No other mods need or allowed. It's intended as an easy way for new racers to get their feet wet for minimal expense. If those new racers do not like our recipe, they can swap their RR/ SM7's back on and go race elsewhere.

Have an open mind. Our racing series is not like traditional club racing. We actually coach all new drivers, feed everyone and crew Saturday night with BBQ by a professional chef, give out piles of new tires even if you're not making the podium. Its different, it's fun. Not everyone's cup of tea but we get a lot of racers joining but virtually no drivers leaving.

We have plans to expand to the Midwest and will likely have a few events there late 2017 with WRL.

Benchy is the resident curmudgeon, it's just his way.   :)   I wouldn't take it personally.

The thinking is reflective of many in traditional club racing, particularly some old timer SCCA members.  SCCA missed the boat on the changing demographics and considerations of entry level racers.  NASA did better by offering DE but cost is still a big concern.  The market being what it is allows for ChumpCar, LeMons and Speed Ventures to pick up the demand.

I see the established club culture, particularly from the old school SCCA side being somewhat myopic and dated in the thinking and execution of getting new racers into the sport particularly with regards to cost.  By the time you get the gear, buy the car and get licensed you're about $15k into the hobby and that's with an uncompetitive car. Then another $500 plus a weekend.  Not exactly cost friendly for most people.  Classes like Super Miata should be welcomed, not ostracized.   Entry is under a couple hundred a weekend and take a $5k car out and have a good time.  There isn't some byzantine, elaborate mechanism to operate the races.  It's like the motorsport equivalent to weekend golf or bowling for folks with normal means.  They aren't out there to go against guys like Shooter McGavin or Roy Munson but rather to have a good time at a reasonable cost with a low barrier to entry.  This kind of thinking should be encouraged, not belittled.

I am pretty sure bench was referring to the allowed modifications list. That list is long and far away from any sm or ssm

At the ARRC, I whistled the top 3 SMSE cars. This is the SEDiv class for 1.6's. All three drivers were running stock untouched motors. These guys had a blast racing each other and I can assure you none of them paid big bucks for their cars. There are many classes in SCCA where you can buy a $5000 car and race someone. Granted it is not SM with 60 car fields  but it is a place to start.

If you want a prepared Miata, race production or GT. Again, it won't cost a lot as long as you don't mind being 5 seconds a lap back.

If SMSE is sealed motors, then it's a bit like SPM. We cap the power, which is more or less the effect of not letting folks under the valve cover. It's simple. Parity means everyone has the same power. SRF works really well, sealed motors. The Honda factor notwithstanding, that's a bit of a debacle I hear.

The difference in SPM is that the low buck build is capable of winning races against a group of former and current national champions in well prepped cars. It is not just about spending less, it is about spending less and still running at the front.

Why does it matter to either of you if someone else chooses to race the same make car in another series?  Not only is SCCA not the arbiter of road racing but it's also not the arbiter how and where Miatas are raced.    This represents exactly a culture of arrogance and entitlement that many in SCCA demonstrate.  It's the culture of sports car racing, particularly the SCCA and Jim's post is a classic example that is the problem.  The sanction and how it is operated is the problem, not the fact others might wish to race elsewhere.

Not everyone wants to race with the SCCA.  Get over it.

Even with the elitist arrogant elephant in the SCCA it seems draw the most highly talented fields across the united states.

So its clear, S3 is a new for 2017 class intended as a low barrier to entry, feeder class for our premier S2 class.

Supermiata is S2.

S2 runs a 225/45/15 Maxxis RC-1 on a 15x9 wheel

140whp power capped

2300# for all years 89-05

full coverage front airdam

14" duck tail rear spoiler, usually clear polycarbonate

single adjustable coilovers with open spring rates and sway bar diameters

Same 5 speed & 4.3 Torsen

S2 lap records are typically 2-4s under SCCA/NASA SM lap records at every track we run.

S2 gets tire rebates, free tires for frequent racers and a little podium cash.
