Can someone explain the Nasa run groups???

I notices some say HPDE on some weekends and other say HPDE and Racing.

Can the HPDE weekends be considered towards the 3 race weekend needed to participate in the championship?

So confusing......

HPDE

If you are interested in learning the basics of High Performance Driving, or simply want to drive your car on a racetrack in a controlled and professionally staffed environment, then HPDE is for you. HPDE gives drivers a chance to test their skills and learn from NASA's cadre of experienced instructors in a venue designed for safe spirited driving far away from the risks present on the street. NASA's HPDE program has become the standard for the 'open track' industry and features multiple skill levels to ensure that drivers are able to enjoy a safe and fun day at the track.

Time Trial

NASA's Time Trial (TT) program offers drivers a chance to compete against the clock to knock down the quickest lap time on many of the country's best racetracks. TT classes are determined using a system that assigns a base class to a car and then moves the car into a different class based on the modifications done by the owner. This format allows enthusiasts to enjoy a wide range of aftermarket upgrades while still being able to compete in a fair environment. More information on the TT program can be found here.

Competition Racing

If you are interested in wheel to wheel racing, then our competition racing program is for you. NASA has created racing programs that accommodate all sorts of popular vehicles with rules that encourage aftermarket modification. NASA has a class for almost any type of vehicle ranging from Production Sedans, Stock Cars, and Formula Cars. If you do not posses a competition license, NASA has programs that will allow you to participate in a racing school to become qualified to race. If you are currently racing with another recognized organization, NASA welcomes you to our program and accepts competition licenses from many different sanctioning bodies.

Racing for a weekend has a SM group, I would imagine the group would run with other classes. Multi able green flag starts for each class. they do this to fit the HPDE, TT, and other clubs for the weekend.

But you need to run in a SM race (or your class) 3X's to qual for the champs, unless you want to do TT at the champs.

You want one weekend like this.

2017 Racing requirements:

  • 5 points paying races (or competing at 3 weekends)
Up to 2 TT points days count toward the 5 races
Enduro of any length counts as 2 races

So I have to start 5 races or 3 complete weekends or combination of TT and races....

Yeah, I was told by a NASA official you had to run 5 races and there are generally 4 in a weekend.  So you have to run a full weekend and then run one more race.  Going to have to hop in a buddy's car or something for one race.  Seems kind of silly to me to make it 5, but I understand why they do it.

No, you can usually get it done in one week end....at least in NASA-SE.  "5 races, one can be a time trial".   Normally we have 2 race groups, Thunder & Lightening composed of multiple classes.   Your races do not have to be in SM class.  So you can do 2 races in SM (lightening race group), 2 races in PTD (Thunder race group), & one time trial and you're done.  Busy week-end.

Hmm. Interesting. I am not saying I don't believe you, because that is good news for me.  I have always thought it was that way, but just got my NASA provisional license, so I have never even been to an event.

But, I asked Jim VanderVliet that question (NASA Official), and he told me that I had to do 5 spec Miata races this year. Maybe I didn't ask the right question or he was confused? I don't know. But, looking at what Richard pulled from the website, it looks like I can do 2 TT races.

Thanks!

The confusion is to get contingency in a class from Mazda ( not sure on Toyo)  You need to run "x" many events in that class. So you can qualify and run the event, but you may not get contingency if you place high enough

Ah okay. I read the NASA contingency program for both Regional and Champs programs and didn't see that in there?

Sorry, I know a lot about the SCCA, but how NASA works is like a foreign language to me :) Lol

I am going to give him a break, Jim.  I don't want Blake sharing any ideas about taking me out on the out lap haha.

And thanks Johnny, I guess I was just told wrong. But, now that I look at it, that's a hell of a lot simpler than how to qualify for the Runoffs this year.  I don't think anyone really knows how to qualify for that one :)
