On the NA transmission, should there be detents for the 3rd and 4th gear shift rod? On mine, if I remove the plugs holding the detent springs and bearing, I can see slots in the 1st and 2nd gear shift rod as well as the 5th and reverse gear shift rod. However, there are not ones in the 3rd and 4th gear shift rod. On the 3rd and 4th gear shift rod, when moved back and forth I can only see a small wear path the ball bearing has made. The FSM apears to have what look like detents drawn on the shift rod. I have not torn the transmission all the way down, only removed the rear extention housing off. The removal was due to the selector rod jumping out from the shift forks, leaving me stuck in second gear.

NA Transmission 3rd - 4th Shift Rod Detent

The shift rod has been installed upside down. Don't ask why I know.
Very common mistake. And yes, I have made it. So has every other builder if the are honest.
The case must be completely removed, the roll pins on the fork and shift rod end removed, rotate the rod and reassemble.

That was my thought as well, but then the next question I have is, how'd did it stay in gear for the two years I've had it?

There are minor detents in the syncro slider. I am sure it had to feel different than the other gears

Great article, but that guy has way tooooo much time to kill.
Also note, that you should upgrade the 3-4 rod to the 1.8 version. As used 94-05. It has the extra lockout pin to prevent engaging 2 gears (usually reverse and 1st) at the same time. Requires the new rod and the small lockout pin be ordered from Mazda. I update all my 1.6 transmissions to the 1.8 rod.

You know, now that you mention it, I would have to say yes.

I did this once on a rebuild. Its one of those things you only do once. Bench testing is your friend.

A little bit of detent action from the neutral switch in the 3-4 gate, too, I'd say? But I agree any major detent omissions are immediately apparent with bench shifting.

I would put a new front gasket and front seal in at minimum
