This is to get honest feedback as to who would want to do a Spec Miata short track Oval race.

There is a guy here in Florida that is basically begging Cory Collum to get some SM guys together and have a money race on one of their Saturday night events. If anyone has seen the video of a bunch of SM guys racing Lanier Speedway a few years ago, it looks like a blast.

The goal would be to have this the week after the Sebring Majors in 2018, that way all the teams from up North would already be down here.  If we can get close to 30 guys that are interested, it could be a FUN race!

Details:

Desoto Speedway - 3/8th Mile 12 degree banking (Bradenton, FL)

100 Lap race plus a qualifying

$300 Entry Fee (estimate)

$3,000 to win

Bring your own set of SM7s

MUST be in Spec Miata trim

Yep, at the local bullring in my neighborhood the entry fee is $50. I'd love to organize a Miata oval race there. Any SMers near Raleigh, NC interested?

The entry fee is for the pay out. Just like the entry fee for scca or NASA, but you could win money back.or we can take the fee away and get a cheap trophy

So... with 30 entries will the purse be $9,000?

We're just trying to figure out if people are interested. It could be 4k to win and pay back. Like 4000 to win 2000 for 2nd 500 for 3rd. And entry fee back to the top 10

No but if it is anything like the last time you can drink your favorite beer while on the grid.

Beer on grid, I like it. This just sounds 'merica AF. I'm going to have to grow out the mullet with Nick "Kenny Powers" Soriano for this one

Ok, but just bear in mind it looks like a greedy promoter looking to fleece club racers as it's pitched right now

Ok so you can go to scca or NASA and not have a problem with paying that price, and get a trophy, but won't pay it to have a chance to win 3 to 4 k

This is nothing new for any of us.  We pay an inflated rate at about $600+ for majors weekends with the SCCA all the time... all for an $8 trophy.

Not to mention ... there will actually be "fans" watching the race instead of just mom and dad lol.

Short tracks normally charge everyone going into the pit area a fee including drivers. That and the fans plus concession sales is how they make ends meet. Desoto Speedway is a nice little track with everyone pitting outside the speedway. Makes coming and going easier than infield pitting. When your turn comes, they line you up and everyone goes on track at once. They do have an outside groove blend/exit line.

If you guys really do this, I will be glad to come over and do tech. I'll keep it easy like we used to do in Pro Cup. Wasn't unusual for winner to have to verify minimum weight of crankshaft! Kind of like your restrictor plates.

I can tell you from experience it is much better to have a $1000 winner purse and then pay all the way down to last than to have a big winner purse. A lot more cars finish in positions other than first. The more cars, the better the race for the fans. And it IS allowed to place side bets in the pits. Von C will handle that,
