SCCA® has developed an additional enhancement to its live Timing & Scoring offerings for Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour events, with a live driver display available beginning with the Mid-Ohio event.

The driver display is designed to provide information directly to the cockpit of a racecar for drivers to access on a smartphone or similar device. Driver displays show the current overall and class position for the driver, gap to the cars ahead and behind, best lap time, laps and time remaining in the session.

An explanation graphic of the available information is available here.

“We have seen great advances in technology and real-time data availability over the last several years for road racing, from the adoption of transponder technology to the introduction of applications like Race Monitor to our continued development of segmented timing through SCCA.com,” said Eric Prill, SCCA Vice President and COO.  “These are great tools to use, but for many, they are only useful after a session. We have now developed a web-based display that can provide several different data points for drivers in a clear display that can be viewed in their car. It’s like adding a couple of Timing & Scoring gauges to the dashboard.”

Separate display screens are available for lap time based sessions (practice and qualifying) and race scoring mode. Screens are accessed by visiting www.scca.com/driverdisplay and entering a driver’s name as it appears in Timing & Scoring for that event. Once a driver’s name appears in the active session, the screen will become active.

As with all other existing live timing data sources, information displayed on these screens is unofficial, and subject to a slight delay due to cellular broadband usage. As with anything else in the cockpit of a racecar, devices should be solidly mounted in location that is easily viewable and not distracting. The web browser-based displays have been tested across multiple devices and platforms and will size dynamically based on the screen. Users are encouraged to disable any screen lock or savers so that the device doesn’t close the browser during the session.

So, what next? Will drivers be texting their crew chief or each other?

Damn, I still remember the days when you were concentrating on staying on track and in front of the car behind you.

But, this is the information age. Saw a woman today at the drive thru car wash on her cell phone as the car started moving into the wash. Yep, you guessed it. She forgot to roll up the window. It was really funny watching the end of the wash crew trying not to laugh as they tried to dry out the inside of the car. I waited until she had left and it was hilarious watching them. There is a God.

Back to the information age.

Just installed some industrial strength Velcro on my radio delete panel and phone. Will be nice for those of us without radios if it works. Don't think I can text with my gloves on though.

I agree in Cota I did not have a radio, and I really enjoyed the time clock they had on the front straight. You can use it for strategy purposes.

Wow, that is actually pretty coo!. It would be nice to have this for all events some day soon and not just the super tours.

Real time location dependent flag colors as the background would be the holy grail.

That would be cool.  Similarly, I wonder how long it will be before SCCA/NASA start using the LED display boards for flags like they do in some of the pro series.

Given the delay mentioned (web browser over broadband), this would be iffy at best with the current system.  Agreed it would be pretty cool though. :)

Wonder how much something basic that mimics what they have in the pro series would run...

Don't hold your breath waiting for LED flagging to be common. It's got three problems:

1. Technical. The system will either be wired or wireless. Wired on most tracks is very expensive and occasionally unviable. Wireless exists (a friend of mine builds a USA version), but again most tracks don't have the infrastructure. Keep in mind that the LED boards need power, so if wired, that's another significant cost. Certainly solar power units exist, but there is no free lunch. Finally the units can only be used with manual oversight, therefore requires corner watchers in place (so why have the boards?) or via video, which amps up the technical/operational requirements considerably.

2. Operational. Technical safety systems such as this need to be tested and maintained. A lot. In addition they require skilled staff operations, which most groups don't have. Simple manual radio systems and flaggers are easier and more reliable to implement, despite our periodic critique of the human performance.

3. Contractual. The systems would probably need to belong to the track and most can't justify the ROI. With that said, a few have done so, and then it could potentially work (albeit with operational complications). If SCCA or NASA bring their own (just as done for F1 races), then the time, effort and cost to implement safely is unlikely to be viable for a club (non significant revenue producing) event.

With that said, I do think that cell phone or wireless based in car systems are highly likely to develop as a supplement to traditional flagging - and can improve safety. I'd happily spend the money to outfit my car with digital receivers, however I can't imagine the out cry if this was forced on people :)

Didn't hear anything about the lights replacing flags other than yellow and red.  We have several others, some of which are nearly as important including surface, white, etc.  The system in use at High Plains also includes a green flag, which makes it usable under the North American Unified Flagging and full FIA rules.  Black remains a problem under SCCA and NASA rules (NAUF and FIA don't use BFA - red does not mean stop but return to the pits as BFA does for SCCA.)

I can fully understand the issue of spurious electronic signals, but the HPR system is the same as the FIA system used for F1 and they don't seem to have a problem with interference.  That system is also in use at Autobahn, Joliet.

As has been the case with Solo derived registration systems, light replacements for flags derived from motorcycle racing will not be immediately complete for automobile racing and will take some time to implement all necessary features to fully replace flags.

I'm running it. Seems most here don't know about it. Worked great from the start of morning practice. Of course I'm not scrutinizing the performance, I look at it about as much as my other gauges. Nice for time left on session and position in class.
