Does anyone know of a good shop that can rebuild my torsen in the greater Chicagoland area, or at least within driving distance? There are shops out there that rebuild diffs in general, but I'd like one that knows Miatas.

Do you have a problem with your diff or are you thinking preventative maintenance?  Depending on your answer you may get some different responses on how to approach!

I suspect I need a rebuild now, but am still not sure.  Trying to completely diagnose a whine  (gearbox or diff??), and a hard to chase down ka-klunk (double-clunk) on hard accel and decel I have been having for more than a year (could be suspension somewhere or diff??).  I'm going to try putting a muffler and plates on the car and carefully driving it on a nearby interstate to see what I get.

 

BTW:  it appears that this same thread is out there twice, like it got added twice.  Interesting.

Lose alignment cams on the rear control arms will cause a clunk, however it normally occurs mid-turn under a g-load.

Ever run it (safely) on jack stands ?
