The 2017 SCCA National Championship Runoffs are underway for the first time ever at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The opening day of qualifying began under gorgeous, sunny skies. Temperatures are expected to climb near 90 degrees, so things are going to get hot! Monday is the first of four qualifying days, with each of 28 car classes getting 18-minutes on track. Now Serving, Number 1
History was made at exactly 8:02 Monday morning when Tim Adolphson’s GT-1 machine was the first car of nearly 1,000 on track for an official 2017 Runoffs session.
It wasn’t the best of mornings for the No. 38 Proficio/Craig Raudman Racing/Peters Racing Engines/Bubba's Gears and Trans Chevrolet Impala, as the motor let go within just a couple of laps. Stay tuned, however – Adolphson has a few tricks up his sleeve, and isn’t headed back to Gig Harber, Washington just yet.
Early Qualifying
Monday morning saw car classes such as GT-1, Touring 1, GT-3, Formula Atlantic and Prototype 2 out on track for the first time. The fastest time came from Sedat Yelkin in FA with a lap of 1:30.783. Jeff Shafer, in P2, was not far behind with a 1:32.179. In GT-1, David Pintaric clocked in with a 1:37.961, and Andrew Aquilante showed what the Touring class could do with a T1 time of 1:43.702.
