The tire contract for SCCA SM expires in 2019.
Several of us on the SMAC, plus Mazda, met with Hoosier at Runoffs and discussed options for SM tires moving forward.
We discussed previous/current slicks and the advantages/disadvantages, as well as goals moving forward:
- Lap times are not important (everyone on same tire)
- Overall grip should be reduced to reduce wear and tear on cars/parts
- Tire longevity is important
- Getting more heat cycles is important
We also discussed previous current rain tires and the advantages/disadvantages. We seek to improve the rain tire so that it will be fast/usable over a number of sessions, as opposed to the super sticky tire that now is great for the first session and falls off drastically from there.
We are working on improved tires for slicks/rains for 2019. Hoosier has already made up some tires to test, which we will have some volunteers testing in the next couple of weeks with Hoosier tire engineers.
Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
