Hello again,

 

After looking for a tire pyrometer, and only finding hardware that looks like it was made in 1985, here is my first prototype for a Bluetooth pyrometer. Cost is around $45 with no probe so far.

My plan is to have the phone App store all the readings. At the moment I just have a proof of concept, but if I can find a few more days of free time I should be able to have it working.

 

If anyone who has experience with pyrometers and recording tire temps at the track could make a wishlist it would help me to get an idea of what features the app will need.

Usable prototype is ready. I decided to spend $5 dollars more and add a power switch that lets the unit turn itself off after 5 minutes of no probe usage. Now I just need to polish up the Android app. I have enough parts to make two more of these if anyone is interested to help me test it.

Nice! I love looking at pretty home brewed stuff. I'd bet most other race car owners do too.

 

With regard to features: I use one of the older memory jobs at the track, and about the only thing I could suggest to improve it would be associating a time/date stamp with the readings. Maybe the newer ones do this already, I don't know. But where I race we typically get 6 on-track sessions per race day, and if I'm messing around with something and taking tire temperatures between sessions it can get confusing when I try to look them over three weeks later before the next race. A time/date stamp would fix that.

 

Oh, and I like the little 'beep' mine gives you when taking readings... but I assume you've already built something like that into yours.

Oh, and it probably wouldn't hurt to have it automatically record an ambient air temp with each set of tire readings (just because you can never have too much data, and it would be so easy to do - the probe in these things is a standard thermocouple and should work just fine for this purpose).  

 

And sorry, not trying come off as a know-it-all here, I just get all enthusiastic about 'projects' of all sorts and my imagination goes off in crazy directions. lol.

Andy, don’t forget the multiple cars option! (Also obvious but since we’re listing everything 🙂)

The little beep you hear is probably from a (relatively) advanced feature whereby logic in the device determines when to lock in on the temp reading. Earlier/lesser models require that the user watch the temperature settle and then press a button to capture each reading.

At the moment I don't have a beep from the device. I will look into that.

 

I will add the option for multiple cars as well as recording ambient. All data is time stamped in the application I'm working on. Thanks for the info.
