Price Drop: Centric Brake Rotors

CentricCTek1-400x321.jpg

Mazda Motorsports has recently discounted Centric brake rotors in two varieties: C-Tek and Premium. These Centric brake rotors for Miatas complement the factory rotors, which are also available at racer discount pricing. The C-Tek are good for standard applications, while the Premium are well suited to endurance racing.

“We wanted to provide racers options in brake rotors,” says Josh Smith, Mazda Motorsports’ development specialist. “Most racing classes, including Spec Miata, allow for substituting wear items, including brake rotors and pads, for alternates meeting the same size specifications. With the aggressive brake compounds being used these days, rotors are a definite wear item.”

The C-Tek rotors are designed to provide value and include non-directional finishes, double disc-ground, machined non-friction surfaces, and G3000 metallurgy. The double disc grinding is designed to ensure parallelism, eliminate run-out and provide near-perfect disc thickness variation.

The Premium brake rotors are also double disc ground and have a non-directional finish on the friction surface, but they also use an electrocoating that provides extra corrosion protection, designed to withstand 400 hours of salt water exposure without rusting. The vane design is similar to the Mazda OE factory rotor. The Premium rotors are only available for NA and NB Miatas.

So are those rotors really better than off the shelf part store rotors? My NAPA units are holding up quite well.

They are off the shelf in some parts stores. We’ve been happy with them but typically bought from Rock Auto, cheaper plus no tax (yet) and about the same shipping. But these new prices and free shipping make the Mazda deal look as good.

We’ve typically replaced fronts for a web of heat cracks before actually wearing them oyt, and even cryo treated ones weren’t immune on the 1.6. But rotors are so cheap it never bothered us. For years the basic Brembos were the best value with careful shopping.
