When you offer a $100,000 top prize, and more, for a reasonably priced racing series, it makes sense that you get a positive reaction. It has been two weeks since the Spec MX-5 Challenge began accepting applications for the 20 seats originally open for 2018, and as of mid-January, the series has received 18 applications.

The series has begun selecting drivers. Applications will be accepted until January 31, 2018, and the series intends to keep at least a few seats open until then so that a high quality, diverse field can be assembled. As a result, there is still time to apply if you are interested. It may make sense to move quickly, given these criteria for selecting drivers:

1) Time of application. The most qualified drivers will be selected before the deadline.
2) Strong competition, but no “ringers” or FIA ranked pros.
3) Reputation for being a clean and fair racer.
4) Upon selection, drivers will sign a full season contract. We will also keep a waiting list should any drivers fail to sign the contract and provide the initial payment.
5) Drivers must have funding in place and meet payment deadlines, including an initial payment upon selection.

The application form can be found here.

Spec MX-5 Challenge offers a new rung on the pro ladder system, positioned between Spec Miata and Global MX-5 Cup, with $100k in winnings going to the champion. Costing $45,000 for the season, with full arrive & drive service, including a race car, Spec MX-5 Challenge is a cost-effective series focused on driver development. If you are interested in becoming a Spec MX-5 Challenge driver for the 2018 season, fill out the easy application form here. Deadline is January 31st. For additional information visit specmx-5.com.

I am interested to see who all of the drivers are. I would think this is a great point of entry for the younger talent that aspires to the pro racing world as a career or even guys/girls just looking for a bucket list type experience. I know even a partial racing season adds up to close to the 45k number. At least it did for me last year, but that included wadding up a car and motor, and the runoffs.  :(

Final Week For Spec MX-5 Challenge Applications

article_2_main_6_jpg_677x1000_q100.jpg

The Spec MX-5 Challenge series has now received 22 applications for 20 seats (10 in the Eastern region and 10 in the Central region). But the series isn’t full yet because the series is holding seats open until the application deadline. The application process closes on January 31, so there is still time for interested, qualified drivers to get an application in.

As many as 8 seats are still open, as series officials have accepted 12 applications at the time of this writing. “We want Spec MX-5 Challenge drivers to have a great experience and that means good competition and clean driving throughout the pack. To come up with the best field we can, we’re taking our time in reviewing applications,” said Todd Lamb, one of the principals of the series. He noted, “We’re asking questions about driver resumes and driver expectations, and giving drivers some leeway to come up with sponsorship, so that we assemble the best driver group that we can.”

Applications are being reviewed for:

Strong, competitive drivers, but no “ringers” or FIA ranked pros.
Driver reputation for being a clean and fair racer.
Driver ability to have funding in place and meet payment deadlines, including an initial payment upon selection.
Driver ability to represent the series well with other competitors, officials, media and sponsors

About Spec MX-5 Challenge

Spec MX-5 Challenge is an affordable pro road racing series with a focus on driver development and a top prize of $100,000. In 2018, its ten-race regular season in the East will run at Virginia International Raceway, Summit Point Raceway, Road Atlanta and Monticello Motor Club. The ten-race Central season will run at NCM Motorsports Park, Circuit of The Americas, Hallett Motor Racing Circuit and NOLA Raceway Park. The top seven drivers from each region will compete at a championship-deciding event at Road Atlanta in November. The twenty drivers selected for the series pay $45,000 and receive full arrive-and-drive services, including transport, entry fees, tires, fuel, mechanical work, engineering and the use of a race car.
