Does a SM need a signal from the front O2 sensor or is this thing just plugging the hole in the down pipe?

It plugs the hole

It keeps the CEL off

Nowhere does it say you may remove it.

Thanks for the replies. No reason to remove it. I just nicked the wire insulation working on something else. Sealed it with silicone for now, if it was important I'd replace it.
