This weekend was my first SM race. I came from SRF/SRF3. I was concerned some, that I would find the lesser performance and precision compared to the SRF3 a little less satisfy. That was not the case at all. The race was a blast. It will take me a little to get used to the mirrors. There is more rear visibility, but the right side mirror is much farther right than I am used to looking.

For those not familiar with Blackhawk Farms. It fun little track with SRF3 lap record of 1:15.574 compared to SM lap record of 1:21.672. I did not miss the extra speed. The SM was so fun to toss through tight technical section. It amazes me how stable the car is. It does not turn in like the SRF3, but it does not try to swap ends during mid corner corrections or overdriven corner.

I am eagerly looking for my next race.

Welcome to SM.

Are you going to race both groups or just convert over to SM?

My garage, trailer, and budget only have room for one car. I sold the SRF3 to get the SM. When I got the SRF originally I looked at both classes. I raced SRF for 5 years. Recent multiple transmission rebuilds at $2700 each as Gen 3 is having some teething problems with the tranny got me thinking of looking at SM again. So unsealed transmissions and the cost savings that come with it got me looking. This past weekend's race tells me I will be very happy with the change.

Welcome, best of luck and it's always good to get some perspective from those that have competed in other classes.  Look forward to more updates.

Welcome to spec Miata!! One of the best parts of spec Miata racing is this web forum and the help of the racers at track. I have given and I have received at track both to and from people I didn’t even know up till then. The only true friends I have race in this class and long after I am done racing I will still appreciate everything I have done and learned

Ironically one of the worst aspects is also the web forum. Like every social media outlet it is good and evil.

Welcome to SM and make face to face friends at the track

I have a SM but honestly prefer the open cockpit of the srf3. Is there a solution out there for the weak trans?

Is that the old Renault or Escort trans?

The transmission is from the Escort. Historically the transmission in the SRF has been robust. With the switch to SRF3 it has become a weak link. SCCA Enterprise is working to improve it, but for now it is expensive. A rebuild is about $2500, which has not changed, but now is needed every 10 weekends on average. As the result of some incorrect information originally given about oil the first rebuild only got 7 weekends.

Also the left axle has always been a little bit of a weak link. That is a little more exposed with more power. Being custom it is about $800 to get a rebuilt one.
