Jim, Saw you guys had fun at Barber in ChampCar.  Share your thoughts particularly on car prep?

To the folks that remember SCCA long races (IE 24 hrs at Nelson, 12 hr at Summit, 13 hr VIR) and have run the newer AER/WRL/Champ .... similar flavor albeit with the higher treadwear tires?

posted a thread up..

We basically built an NA car with a VVT swap.

For all intents and purposes it is basically a well built SM,  a VVT drivetrain in a NA chassis  with some exceptions below

We added Penske shocks already

it is a 4.1 instead of 4:30 ( thinking it may help fuel economy)

engine is more like ita build and has a header, plus 25 on hp over SM

sliders on seat

We pulled back glass and plan on running lexan.

Other than not repainting the car.. It was a full race build SM in terms of prep.

So Jim would you do a VVT again or a 99 swap? Dependability of the 99 electronics over the VVT?

Well I "did" a VVT and clearly had both options :)

Either is a good choice I think. VVt can have more gremlins...

You could but would be F because the rules only allow +2 gallons over a stock fuel tank. So you would have to pit for more fuel often. Its maditory you pit every 2 hours and its maditiory 5.minutes when you do pit. So the key is to try and make it on fuel for two hours. That’s why cars with big fuel tanks do so well.

What are the fueling rig rules? (I guess I could look them up) Can you use a dump can/dry break?

There is a minimum pit time, so there is no real advantage to this.

So the perfect car would make 2 hours on fuel, Handle, and have lots of power. The Saab can hold 20 gallons and has a turbo so its fast. But it handles like crap and the trans is like glass. Bennett has run on one of the Saab teams and they have won a lot of races. The cars are incredibly ugly. It does fit Bennett though.

Correct. BUT, it does help to get the fueling done as quick as possible, because the rules say you aren't allowed to work on the car while fueling.  The only thing you are allowed to do while the gas cap is off, is change the driver and change "driver comfort" items such as water bottle, cool suit, camera, etc.

So, if you know you have to change a brake pad for instance, you cant start jacking the car up and taking the wheel off til the gas cap is back on. So, every second saved definitely counts.

We fuel the car, driver change, cool suit, drink bottle, clean the windshield/lights/grill, check/add oil, check all 4 tires, and check brake pads usually within 3.5 minutes. Stops usually go well as along as the team knows who has what job before the car comes in. But when the unexpected happens is when you kill all your time. Or when a driver comes in unexpected. Oh and radios that are reliable are a must. A driver on track without communication makes it all very changing. If you really want to piss of Mike, come in early.

The SAABs fit me perfectly, performance, reliability and wins over looks and impressing the cool kids :)  Plus, I can make it longer than an hour behind the wheel :)

And yes, we all know how much you care about looks over reliability and performance, with your Audi Outback!  You should bring it to a track day so you can give a Cobalt Wagon two point-bys in one session!  :) :) :)
