I'm going to do the same with the G2X I got from you. Haven't decided on aux cover. It would have to be pretty small to fit below my elbow there, I would think. But, then given the number and size of holes to fit the cables...I'm not sure how effective it would be in the event of a firepull.
The other consideration with this mounting location is HEAT. My tunnel gets pretty hot----hot enough to bother me as an electrical engineer. I'm thinking of mounting mine on some 1/2" aluminum bar stock and slipping some insulating material underneath.

Did the same for the ChaseCam box on the side of the tunnel, before switching to the Sony HD camera.

I put mine on the rear deck, I got tired of having my elbow knock into it on the tunnel. I don't know of any requirement that it be centrally placed, just level and pointing in the right direction.
I have mine mounted on the tunnel. No problems. If it's velcroed, it reall isn't touching the tunnel (insulated). BTW, the tunnel heat isn't enought to bother the adhesive on the velcro.

How have you guys secured the main unit to your race car? I'd like to hard mount it rather than use velcro. TM recommended that I put it on the trans tunnel beneath my elbow. Have you placed your unit inside any kind of container to protect it from dust and moisture? I'm thinking one use of a fire system will probably kill the unit and then I'm in the hole for a $grand$.
I used to have my DA system mounted on the tunnel under my elbow. After hitting it a few times, having a hard time reaching the buttons to start/stop the unit and wanting more protection, I moved it to inside the IP in the are left by the radio, just in front of the shift lever.
This is on a NA car
I made a small plate that is bolted to the lowest cross point for the IP. Plate is bent so that the DA system (DL1, but Traqmate fits also) sits level. DA unit is held by velcro.
Cleans up the install since the only wire coming out of the dash now is the GPS antenna. Completely out of the way since its inset and now I can easily reach and see the unit. And its still on the center fr/rr axis of the car (its just further forward than center of mass)
Not the best pic, but to give you and idea of where its at, you can just see the corner of the DL1 next to the ~4 o'clock point on the steering wheel. If you want, I can take a better picture.

I thought of mounting my AIM unit on the tranny tunnel then decided no since crawling over the tranner tunnel is my escape route out the passenger side. I mounted it on the floorpan right next to the tunnel.
