Road Atlanta has always been one of my favorites, if not my favorite track. The track lends itself to exceptional racing. I had a pretty good record going there with four wins in the last three Super tours. I had hoped this weekend would cooperate,  It didn't   Congratulations to Danny and Preston for their wins and podium finishes for Jared Thomas 

 

From my perspective the race on Saturday was frustrating. I was the fourth car and could not hang in the draft, I could catch back up from 1-7 as I had clear track and no accordion effect.  Never really able to help Preston much and would lose the draft and start that process over again lap after lap. The car became looser and looser in turn seven and that only made my situation worse and worse.. the front three were driving lights out and gave me no chance to get back in. I finally went off at three over driving trying to close the gap and then the caution fell and race was over. 

 

For yesterday's race I made some changes to the car. it was good for first three laps or so as stickers masked the real handling of the car.. But I think we over corrected. The car was now too tight in 7 and 10 B. I drove off there a few times.. By mid race the car came in nicely and felt I had the best handling car at the end of the race.  I posted my videos below.. no fancy editing, sorry. It was not the neatest cleanest races, lots of mistakes by all. It was however one of the most intense races i have run in a long long time. Mad props to all involved around me yesterday. Preston, Danny, Jared,Chris and Tyler.   All of you guys drove the wheels off the cars and what a blast to race all of you. What  crazy intense race.   

My video is in two parts... part one ends with me under Danny and part two starts with mne past Danny.. No I didn't edit out the punt I was charging one trying to get Danny to over commit into three. He had a slight lock up which enabled me to get by.

Impressive race by all. Congrats to Danny and Preston on the hard fought wins over the weekend!  This is why SM is by far the best class.

Despite being unhappy with the results, my first SM race at Road Atlanta and first race weekend in 8 months was a lot of fun.  It's great to be back and was great to see everyone again! 

 

The level of competition at the Super Tour events in SM is insane (nothing's changed).  I haven't forgotten how critical track position is and felt the weight of that on Saturday.  Without two slower cars in the way on my flying lap, with Danny pushing, my data showed the #44 was good enough to start on the front row.  Unfortunately, we got split up before we could go after a clean lap and I got relegated to fifth.  On the start of Saturday's race, leaving lots of room to the inside, Cefalo came in too hot and tight to the curb in T3, overcorrected and tagged my RR.  I managed to throw the wheel, do a full 360, grab second gear and kept going.  Huge props to everyone behind me for serious heads up driving - don't know how I managed to escape without getting creamed.  Saturday's race was over at that point, but I did managed to drive from around 20th back to 10th before the FCY.

I would argue with Jim about having the best handling car on Sunday.  We thought my car was 100% after the Glen in 2018 (my last race) only to have the same inability we battled last season with the car not pulling up to anyone in a draft.  Handling-wise, my car was on rails Sunday which helped keep me in the mix almost to the end.  Despite finishing P4, it was a fun race.  I spent most if it watching Danny, Jared, Preston, Chris and Jim mixing it up.  All hell breaks loose at 23:36 in Jim's first video and I manage to make up a TON of ground when Jared slows up the group.  I put two off under the bridge with a big run on Jim and jumped up to P3.  I knew I HAD to get in front of someone to have a shot at continuing forward progress.  Jim was really good through T5 and I got checked up a bit.  He got a great run on Preston, Danny and myself leaving me no choice but to concede when he stuck his none in on me at T6.  I was hoping for a bit more drama on the last lap, as it was my only chance.  

 

Congrats to Danny and Preston on their wins.  Great racing with all the usual suspects and looking forward to adding to my VIR super tour win total in a few weeks ;-)

I’m baffled by how little power you seemed to have compared to a couple cars, especially early on, but you were killing it with fast hands through sector 1. Unfortunately that section doesn’t provide a lot of opportunities to pass.

 

Steve, I think all of us at the front, with the exception of Tyler, felt our cars were very equal. I felt I had what Preston, Jim and Chris had, and a little more than Jared and Tyler. 

 

Not sure how they will be now after the tear down. Taking our engine home in a box every weekend is wearing us out.
