After fearing for my life at the VIR HST race, I'm all for a rain light rule.

 

One has been proposed in the minutes this month.

Honestly, I'm having difficulty interpreting it. Sounds like we can either install a strobe rain light, or use the existing center light (CHMSL) as a running light in the rain. I'm not seeing when we are required to turn it on.

 

Some lawyers help me out here.

I personally think it is a good thing.  I would guess we would just wire the center light to a switch on the dash.  I think it is a pretty simple deal.  Don't know about the strobe.

sounds to me like that is all the rule is requiring.

Other endurance racing entities require a flashing rain light that is independently controlled (switched) from the brake lights themselves (you enable its illumination and the brake application changes its state: flashing vs. solid)

Some wish to have it flashing until brake application.

Some wish to have it solid until brake application.

 

It doesn't matter to me what the SCCA does however the issue is the fact these 1990s-era tail light assemblies are quite often barely visible in the dry let alone in a spray/mist of a wet racing surface.

 

To my mind, phasing in a rain light requirement on all sedans is a no brainer as they are neither expensive nor difficult to install and wire.
