Just going to leave this out there. Unfortunately, the reputation for Miata racing, primarily in SCCA is that is there must be contact. That perception is very real. As with an old MG, I finance my own car under the watchful eye of the Mistress of Finance, who (usually) must obeyed, I am not interested in the "I can't pass you, so I'll hit you" mentality. Vintage offers an alternative, and is usually looked down upon as inferior competition. It is far from it. If you have not attended one, try it.

And FWIW, there are no trophies.

Show up. Race as hard as you want. It's actually harder to NOT hit your competitor when racing in close quarters...

In vintage racing, even the Spec Miata racers don't want to race against other Spec Miata racers!

I completely disagree with your opinion.  So easy to say stuff like that and many (not pointing at you) who can't compete use is as an excuse to dis the class.  Yes there is contact in Sm.. but considering the sheer numbers and close competition..  it is probably better than most.

Some of the best racing, IMHO, V8 Supercars, has plenty of contact. It’s SM on steroids or V8s.

Well, it’s often good hard racing but more like a modest regional than a well attended SCCA SM race. People are more cautious because it’s demanded, and in many classes because they don’t want to ding a precious car, but if one or two top prep SM car/drivers show up and take it seriously you think they won’t walk the field? You should hope the option doesn’t get too appealing, else we will be hearing complaints next that it takes a $50k car to compete in V-SM.

When we have a professional Spec Miata car builder winning vintage races, what selling price do we put on said car?

As always, whatever the market will pay. But my $50k crack was just that, riffing on the common BS refrain that passes for a mid-packer’s excuse.
