Is anybody hearing any rumors if SCCA will change the Runoffs Qualifications in light of Majors/Super Tours and Divisional races getting cancelled?

I sent an email to the SCCA, but got a less than encouraging reply.  My personal feeling is that after years of participation being the only requirement for Runoffs qualification, this is NOT the year to change that.  Many of us mid-pack guys have to pick our races accordingly to get the necessary points.  Those of us in the Northeast usually start a bit later, as well.  I had 3 NE Majors canceled where I feel I had a good opportunity to accumulate sufficient points.  Going forward, we don't know if races/Majors get canceled due to regional issues with Coronavirus hot spots.  Right now, I'd like to take advantage of any race I might actually have the opportunity to attend, and not have to worry about trying to pick the ones where I may be able to get points.  I'd love to come out to the June Sprints (annually the weekend before Watkins Glen...down the road from me), but I won't score points at Road America.  I think we need to drop the (meaningless) point requirement.

In a conference call with Club officials and NEDiv stewards a couple of weeks ago, it was acknowledged the the Runoff criteria will be changed but that it was too early to make any definitive statement.  Since there will be no races here in NEDiv through at least the end of May, it was anticipated that no decision would be made until late June.  It was stated  the the criteria would be reduced to compensate for the cancelled events but, if at all possible, would include some Major and/or regional participation.  There was no mention of the number/type of events or the inclusion of points.

Stay tuned

C'mon Domm. I'll be at RA (not planning but a point scored would be awesome) and was planning for WGI.

Right, I'll be there too, socially distancing from the fast guys.  Sadly, Watkins Glen has been canceled.  As more of these races drop, there's less chance to score points.  SCCA should go back to the previous participation requirement.  The Runoffs are at a 4 mile track.  Let everyone who can make it out of quarantine come play in the sand.

Hot off my email:

The updated as of today, May 20, 2020 SCCA National Runoffs Qualifications for this year only!

A competitor must meet participation requirements.

a. Participation Requirements
For 2020 only, due to COVID-19 event cancellations: Participate on track in a minimum of three (3) separate U.S. Majors Super Tour and/or Conference event weekends and have a minimum of one (1) individual race finish, all in the same class. Events may be a part of any Conference.

A driver may substitute up to two of these required Majors weekends with:

  • Regional race weekends (separate from any qualifying Majors weekends) in the same class, or
  • Substitute entries in the same class
  • May be any US Majors Tour Conference or Hoosier Super Tour event held after March 16 that the driver did not participate in within the same class.
  • Substitute event entries must be purchased by 9/21/20 and are nonrefundable.

Example: A driver is only able to participate in one Majors weekend in 2020 and finishes one race on that weekend. They will qualify for the Runoffs if they:

  • Participate in two additional Regional Weekends in the same class, or
  • Participate in one additional Regional weekend in the same class and purchase one substitute event entry, or
  • Purchase two substitute event entries.

Awesome...looks like you can even buy your way in.  My goal is simply to race whenever I get the chance.  See y'all.
