Just wondering how prone the 99 Federal exhaust manifolds are to cracking.  I have a cracked one right now and am wondering how much general troubleshooting I need to do before replacing with a clean one.  Just had it off the car while replacing piston rings and valve stem seals.  Didn't notice the crack then, but could have already been there.

Plugged computer into the OBDII and did a decently fast and long drive.  Coolant temps, O2, and ignition timing all seemed pretty normal.  Also the manifold itself doesn't seem overheated.  Anything else to look for?

Already have a new (used) one ordered, but is it possible to weld the crack up?  Drill the ends and excavate ("V) the crack before welding. I have no idea if it is cast iron or cast steel. Tried a grinding/sparking test and didn't get many sparks.  Seemed pretty hard, although a small drill bit seemed to bite pretty easily.  Didn't want to get in too deep without a replacement.

Any thoughts?  And sorry if this is an annoying post.
