I am looking to refresh my 99's look, currently it has 3 different colors of fender/hood/door.  The majority is silver, w/ white hood/door and a red fender.  Has anyone done a DIY paint or wrap?  If so what did you choose and why.  Any tips?

Short of just spray bombing the different colored panels I want a 50/50 job (it looks good from 50 feet at 50 mph).

I have a place to spray (outbuilding) and could get a cheap HF spray gun.

Anyone?

DIY Paint isn't that hard to do...esp for a 50/50 job.  I wouldn't get a cheap HF gun, though.  I looked at them....but, I ended up getting a Devilbis gun for not that much more than the HF options.  Of course you'll need a few extra bits besides just a gun: gun stand, dryers, filters, mixing pots, pressure regulator, fittings, spare nozzles, etc.  I was probably all-in for $300 or so?

The biggest thing to get used to is the speed at which the paint goes down.  Get some cheap paint and practice arm movements on something.  Get good lights, and a light on a stand that you can reposition to help see reflections when spraying.

Good ideas, thanks.  Maybe I'll look into a Maaco or Earl Schibe paint job  (They used to have a $99 special).  I Have seen a few ads on Facebook for pretty cheap also.

$99 paint job? I'm envisioning staying in the car as it rolls through a car wash with paint then a dryer :)

If they could fit that into a hauler and bring it to the track, along with a vinyl cutter....now we're talkin!!!

Well it was 40 years ago....   Also you got zero prep and one blind woman taping off your chrome bits :burst:   Less than a year later you had faded chalk for paint.

I never painted my Spec Miata, but painted my Spec Racer Ford. I used an Eastwood gun. They had good support in accessories and tutorial videos. I used a single stage paint because it was cheaper. Looked good and not that much work. I also did wraps. It was kind of a pain because the Spec Racer Ford has some complex shapes. I think it would be easier on Miata. I would spring for better vinyl if doing a wrap.
