The Maybury Cup

“The Northeast’s Ultimate Mazda Miata Race”

The Maybury Cup is presented by MMC member Chris Maybury who took a fancy to Spec Miatas and decided to personally host an annual race out of the pure love of competition. In 2009, a dozen cars showed up on short notice in a highly competitive sprint race to have the winning team’s names engraved on the world-famous Maybury Cups: two Georgian silver cups circa 1860!

In 2010, over 25 teams came out to compete. Team Maybury took the Cup at the Spring Sprint and Team Goldman/DeMan won the Fall Classic Enduro.

Chris has asked MMC to open its doors to ALL SPEC MIATA DRIVERS (members and non-members) for two separate team-based competitions:

Tuesday, May 31st: The Maybury Cup Spring Sprint (Two 30-minute races)

Gates open at 7:30am Track open at 9:00am

Tuesday, October 18th: The Maybury Cup Fall Classic Enduro (3 hour endurance race!)

Both Maybury Cups are open to all Spec Miata drivers who drive SSM or SM cars with SCCA or NASA. Driver must hold a current NASA, SCCA, club racing license, or obtain approval from MMC’s Chief Instructor or Track Director.

I drove the enduro last fall, and it was lots of fun. Very unique track with lots of hidden technical challenges. The guys who drive there in the club have a SERIOUS advantage. The only problem is that since there is no sanctioning group, tech is raise your hood and look at the other guys car, after the race is over and not if they drive to their trailer right away. I'm just sayin....

Phew...... that was a close one!

Let me make sure I understand
You run for FREE,no entry fee on a track built to state of the art F1 standards, they give you breakfast and champagne after the race. That isn't good enough so we find fault with locals having and advantage and lack of tech since it isn't a sanctioned race?
Sometimes I just don't understand?

I also ran the enduro last year. Three hours of am track time to learn it and a three hour enduro. Free. Chris Maybury put on a great event and was a gracious host. A class act. Also, this place is state of the art. To be a member, your personal worth needs to exceed around $5 mil. They are no longer renting to clubs so if you can make it, may be the only chance for us normal people to run this track again.

Sounds cool! My brother lives in NY. This might be just the excuse to
visit in the Fall. I'm not going to win anyway so no worries about tech, etc.
Sounds like fun (and thus my moniker)

I'm probably in for the fall race.

Adam, I think a lot of people are going to have cars entered. Chances are you could have your pick of a seat.

A huge thanks to Chris Maybury for hosting the event, along with Monticello Motor club. It has always been a truley fun, class act, and today was no exception.

For the record, Chris sponsors the renting of the track for the day so that Miata racers can come, enjoy free practicing and racing at Monticello Motor Club, a wonderful venue. There aint no money in it. There aint no marketing behind it. Its just a dude who is well enough off to spend his hard earned money to give the Miata group a free day on an amazing track. They serve free breakfast, a catered lunch, and champagne afterwards punctuated by a lot of hand shaking and story telling, the big 'fish ' that almost got away.

I think there were nearly 30 cars today. Those who came got free open pit lane practice from 9 to 12, a tasty lunch, and then two 30+ minute sprints. With open track in between. A few grand am teams were there as well testing before heading up to WGI for the Grand Am races there this weekend.

The racing was awsome. They set the grid by pulling car#s out of a hat for race #1, and then invert that for race#2.
I had the pleasure of being picked second to last, which meant tons of fun in race #1 and then outside pole in race#2.
I made it up to 6th or so in race#1, which was pretty exciting. Race #2 i had a terrific time battling with 3 pros and learned a ton, and saw some great stuff. I'll post some video tomorrow.

There are always a couple of people who talk about scrutineers, or a dyno, etc. End of day, its about competing and being as sportsman-like as possible. have some fun. race the cars. find cars to battle. I had a battle today for about 6 laps, nose to tail with one of the young pros, and at any point we could have sent each other off, punting field goals left and right. but we handled it right and w hile we took it to the line, noone crossed it. i learned so much in that 30minutes seeing how he protected lines and how he pressured me. Ultimately he was the better driver/car, and dyno or not, deserved the victory. but i came away thinking how lucky i was to get in an amazing race, mid-week, free lunch, on a state of the art track. Dyno? didnt even cross my mind.

and, for those who are conerned they might never be able to get on to the Monticello track. its not that hard. all yo uhave to do is contact them and tell them you want to participate in the next Maybury Cup and you're on track.
He also rents Lime Rock twice per year as well, and opens that up to Miata racers at no charge.

if we dyno'd that, it be big horsepower.
Thanks again to Chris.

Don't know who Chris is, but you have to admire a person who shares his good fortune with others.

We tried to make the race as we felt PLANET MIATA would add a little flavor to a MIATA event...but timeing was not on our side and we had to take a rain check for the last event

Hopefully we'll be there in the future as it seems like a great event.

All the best to everyone and a special Thank You to chris...I hope we meet some day

FWIW, i believe there are TWO maybury cup events still upcoming:
i believe one is Oct 8th at Monticello motor club, and the toher is Oct 21 @ Lime Rock.
One is usually an awsome 3 hour Enduro. I hated doing it, but Rick Deman had to pry the top trophy out of Chris & Elivan's hands last year in a 3 hour battle that came down to some door banging on the last lap with our team grabbing the top step.
my favorite race of the year. and, it took place on like a friday!! how great is that!?

if the protocol remains, these are free events to sm drivers.
contact monticello or LRP to get more details. i dont have anything further.
