When I used to used the allen heads before disabling completely, I would typically run allen in snug and back it off 1/2 to 3/4 turn

So the set screw has to be removed, Along with its associated other parts, In order to disable it.

What your really trying to do is remove the guts form inside the piston. The little dealy bob is held in by the wire C clip.
