Roll Cage: Trans Tunnel Patch, Driver’s Seat Mount

Posted by Tom Hampton , 03-10-2011 - - - - - - · 4,364 views

Hmmm….I’m ready to be done with the cage and move on to something else…like driving it!  Oh well, can’t get done if you don’t get started.  Onward! As frequent visitors will know, I had to cut a notch in my transmission tunnel to move the seat far enough away from the upper door bar.  Well, in reality it is to move my HEAD away from the door bar....

Roll Cage: Rear Cross-brace, passenger’s door bars

Posted by Tom Hampton , 03-08-2011 - - - - - - · 4,105 views

The first task of the day was to install the rear cross bar, and diagonal bar.  Simple stuff..these straight bars.  The idea is to cut and fit the diagonal bar first, then just cut the cross-bar to fit.  I like the look of the overlapping joints.http://www.tomhampton.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/P1010027_thumb.jpg  http://www.tomhampto...o/wp-content...

My external blog

My web service automatically updated my wordpress installation today.  I was out on a flight test without connection.   Apparently, the new installation required a database update.  I don't know if this down'ed the site.  I fixed the database as soon as we landed.  The site is back up.

Roll Cage: Driver’s Door Bars

Okay, so based on the traffic to the site recently….folks are getting bored with the cage install.  That’s okay, its almost done.  I ordered the last of the parts that need to be welded to the cage, today.  Accomplishments for the day: drivers door bars, and rear diagonal bar. http://www.tomhampto...20_thumb4.jpg   Win...

Roll Cage: Window Bar, Knee bar, Rear Down tubes

Posted by Tom Hampton , 02-17-2011 - - - - - - · 1,432 views

Today’s job was to finish fitting and tack in all parts of the main cage, if I could.  Everything always seems to go slower than you want!  Anyway, the things left are the Winshield bar, knee bar, and rear down-tubes.  I spent most of the day on the windshield bar.  The windshield bar and knee bar both fit between the cage sides that I finished yester...

Roll Cage: Seat and Cage sides, final fit

Posted by Tom Hampton , 02-15-2011 - - - - - - · 1,314 views

Last weekend I’d decided that I needed to notch the transmission tunnel to make room for the seat.  So, today I got down to it.  I’d done some banging with the hammer before…and I’d noticed a squeal coming from the driveshaft the last time I rolled the car.  I was guessing that I mushed something over into the driveshaft.  Sure enough, I’d pushed the heat...

Roll Cage: Fitting the Seat

Posted by Tom Hampton , 02-12-2011 - - - - - - · 1,146 views

I’m a little behind on updates.  These pix are from last weekend.I’m to the point where I’m ready to cut things to final lengths.  That means that I need to finalize the seat location.  So, I temporarily held the cage bits together, and set the seat into place.  I needed to decide where the drivers cage side would meet the main-hoop.  I could either go hi...

Roll Cage: Tacking it in

Posted by Tom Hampton , 02-09-2011 - - - - - - · 1,164 views

Well, it’s superbowl sunday. Today it was time to actually start tacking parts into the car.  First, the footings.  Since these all contact the car, I needed to do final cleaning on the sheet metal that contacts the footing plates.  This involved sanding the last bits of paint out of the way, scraping the last remnants of seam sealer from the joints, and...

Roll Cage: Dash, and Driver’s cage side

Posted by Tom Hampton , 02-06-2011 - - - - - - · 5,531 views

The Advanced Autosports cage is installed between the plastic dash, and the metal substructure.  The dash-bar is separated from the plastic dash, and then it is bolted into the car.  The dash will be installed once the cage is complete.  First the dash and dash-bar must be separated.  There are a ton of screws.  I’ve pointed out a few in the pictures belo...

Today is the day I get started on installing the cage.   I ordered this tubing notcher from Northern Tool (Ole Joint Jigger).  Plus I bought two 1 5/8” hole saws down at Lowes.  It is clamped in my woodworking vise on my workbench. http://www.tomhampto...uploads/2011...
