Like I said, I wanted to go faster, so I could catch up to my friend Brent. He is a few seconds faster than me. So I was deciding on what to do.
My motor is an oldie, and my suspension is for an SM. My intake sucks (some HKS jobby) and I am using the Mazda Comp exhaust (which is a SM exhaust, and from what I hear, not a very good one). I am in IT, and I also have a stock ECU.
SO, I decided to do some shopping / spend some money. But what do I get?
I can't afford a new motor, and I have a 1.8 so I think it is a waste to dyno the car if I can't get any gains. I don't have a fuel pressure regulator, and don't want one. My preference is to get an ECU and wide band O2 sensor so I can do a full tune. But should I do that with an old tired motor? Could it damage this one?
I want a header, but will that be enough to help me? Is it worth the $400?

I spoke with some of my buddies, and this is what I came up with:
- The OPEN DIFF needed to go. That is first. So I bought a Torsen 4.10:1 and installed it this weekend. (so check that off)
- The exhaust I have is the Mazda Comp exhaust, and I was told that although it is still an SM exhaust, the Springfield dyno one will be better, so I have my exhaust sold, and purchased the new one with that money (so basically get this one for free). I have not yet installed it, but plan to soon.
- Finally, since we are expecting rain next weekend for the race weekend, I purchased a set of Team Dynamic PR2 wheels from a friend for a great price, and a set of Hoosier H2O tires for the rain.
- I have tabs on an ECU! Someone has a factory ECU that has been reflashed, changing the A/F and the rev limiter. I am thinking about doing 2 dyno pulls soon, one with the old ECU and one with this one to see which nets better power for the ITA car. If this works, I may not have to buy a stand-alone ECU!!! I might see if I can borrow the ECU for the National weekend to see what it can do for me.
- Clean motor oil (so Brent won't show people my black dipstick and embarrass me anymore)
- Clean diff oil
