I invited a family friend to drive this past weekend with me. He entered his Audi S4 in HPDE1 as a true beginner. I entered in TTE with high hopes to win a tire! The race car was all prepped and ready to go! And MAN was I excited to get out and drive!
My friend was SO much of a newbie, I had to (on the morning of the event) help him clean out his car, check the car, tires, PSI, lugs... EVERYTHING. and that didn't give me much time to prep myself (I needed an annual tech, to fill out my build sheet, and do the instructor classroom session, all before my first driving session). Needless to say it was a BUSY morning! But by Sunday, he was handling all of his own "prep" and understanding why it was important for him to know how to do so.
Luckily for me, I was assigned only my friend for the weekend. Shew! What a break to only have one student! My warm-up session helped me appreciate "race miata" over "street miata". My times for the entire weekend were 1:30;xx. By the end of Saturday, I decided to get out of TTE and move up to TTD where I was closer in times to MAYBE get a 2 or 3rd place.
Sunday proved to be the same for me. 5/10 from 3rd and my free tire
My student in the Audi was optimal when it came to students. He listened, processed, and executed all of my comments. by the end of the weekend, he was driving the track with little to no input from me. And I think I may have created a new addict! By the end of the weekend, he was asking about buying a Spec Miata
Oh, NASA also does "HyperDrives" which are a one session option for new drivers. They pay to drive and be instructed in one 20 minute session. I had a friend of mine that I have instructed in the past. He did GREAT, learned the line almost INSTANTLY, and I was comfortable to ramp up his speed and skills IMMEDIATELY. He happens to be the crew chief for Weekend Warrior (Alan) and I was honored that he allowed me to jump in his right seat and help guide him around the track. It was some of the most fun I had instructing all weekend!
