Yup, I am feeling like I need some car love, so I went to the kart track on Sunday at Summit Point Kart. I am a firm believer that seat time is seat time. I learned a lot about racecraft by doing a full season of karting about a year ago. By racecraft, I mean passing, being passed, managing road rage, managing cheaters, and having fun.
I used to do A LOT of karting in the past 2 years. I organized SPK's first GP rental, their first 60 minute enduro, first 90 minute enduro, first 120 minute enduro, first 4 hour enduro, and first 12 hour enduro, My rules set was quickly adapted as the norm, including the "Le Mans" style start where all drivers run to their karts from the opposite side of the track. (not that they wouldn't have come up with these on their own at some time). I also helped launch the kid karting instructional schools and series for the facility.
I stopped doing karting after the 12 hour last year because my track schedule got pretty full. Right after (or for my 12 hour) they reconfigured the track to include a chicane in the front straight. I had not driven that configuration and was excited to try it out!
Summit Point Kart had Sodi RX7 karts, and new for this season, they purchased a fleet of Sodi RX250 karts. They are simply bad ass. It sounds and feels like you are in a race car, they are FANTASTIC! But you need to qualify to drive them by getting a :52 and nothing slower for the entire session!
My first session (out of 3) was a 57.9 (yuck). But it was an recon session for me. Second was a 54 (not bad), and the final was a 53 (respectable)! I didn't qualify Sunday for the RX250, but I am confident that if I had tried one more session, I would have had it!
Next time I guess!
As for car FIXES, I have some R&D that I will write about tomorrow... It is closing time and I'm going home!
