Oil Pressure Gauge Issue

Here is a clip of my electric oil pressure gauge. Oil Pressure Gauge The gauge worked for my first few race weekends, but now it flickers, pegs and stays there. I can get it to work by disconnecting and reconnecting. Any thoughts on what is going on with it?

Could be a classic case of the sensor shorting to ground. I'd put a mechanical gauge in and test to be sure you aren't getting fluctuations just in case. Could be a bad sensor, you can measure the resistance to check. Pegging and hanging there is a common symptom of shorting to ground or a bad sensor.

It looks like the gauge is bad. The move-stop-move of the needle points (pun intended) me towards a bad gauge.

If the sensor is mounted directly to the engine, the vibration/harmonics of the motor will rattle it's brain.

They're much happier with a remote mount.

How would you suggest checking a gauge without being able to swap to a known good spare? I've got access to a variable DC power supply so I can ramp voltage to test the gauge but most folks may not. Is there a low buck way, alkaline battery perhaps, that folks could use to test the gauge?

I read the same thing on the Autometer site about remote mounting the sensor. Mine is mounted on the engine. It looks like a bad sensor or gauge to me.

So I just went out to rethink what it will be like to get the sensor out and in. When I grabbed the wire going to the sensor the nut is loose. I tightened the nut finger tight, started the car and the problem went away. The indication is stable from the start with a much shorter swing with engine revs and does not swing or pulse way over to the right. Unfortunately it came back after running for a little while. So maybe sensor/sensor connection is messed up. Bounced, rumble stripped and vibrated like it's on a race car.

Just a follow up to finish this off. It was/is the connection on the sender. The post coming out of the sender is partially stripped. So I was able to tighten the nut without allowing the post to turn and the gauge worked normally at the track all weekend long. I'm going to go ahead and remotely mount a new sender and hopefully live happily ever after.
