Ask the guys that run short track in So Cal. Irwindale suddenly closed last week. I just reupped my NASCAR license to Feature class so I can crew on a car this year, though I'm not cleared yet, they don't care. They care that I had 190 bucks to give them and ran a couple seasons in the lower divisions. All I need now is a six figure super late program and I'm good to go.

If you want to look at models that have been successful recently in amateur or semi pro motorsport check out what Tom Kutshcer has done with Superkarts USA and what Andy Seeseman with Gatorz Challenge of the Americas and Gatorz Cup. Costs about as much to run either of those than it does club racing. Bowman Gray or Eldora would be good models as well but I don't know how well a sponsor and front gate supported approach would work in club sports car racing. Club racing is more like karting in terms of market (racer vertical market supported) except for the big events like Runoffs or Supernats.
I think the pure club model is dated and no longer relevant in the market today. I think the more it's looked at as delivering a product, the race, to the customer, the racer, than about a not for profit club model that is burdened with layers of bureaucracy.
