I have noticed a gray powdery substance on 3 of the 4 holes and wires at the coil pack. Then #4 wire and hole was fine.
Any ideas on the what, why, how, etc. of this observation and proper approach to correcting and preventing?

That is usually caused by poorly installed plug wires. Look down into the coil and you will see that the electrical contact is about an inch below the coil tower. Often the wire is not extending far enough out of the boot and does not actually make mechanical contact with the coil. Thus arcing and the powder.

Most plug wires use a straight metal terminal which has to be pushed through the rubber boot, far enough to reach the electrical contact inside the tower. This is the primary reason I use only MSD plug wires. The MSD wires use a 90* terminal and boot that is designed to fit the coil. It will never push up through the boot. There is a good pic on page 38 of "The Spec Miata Constructors Manual"
